MrSpeakers Alpha Dog Revealed! - The World's First Production 3D-Printed Headphones - Page 80

When you say mono does this mean that the alpha dog won't work with out a balance source? Will a single astell and kern or colorfly C4 not work? Oh dear :-(

Balanced isn't the same thing as stereo etc. The AD will work find with the AK100/120 and C4.

One question I had from looking at the available photos of the Alpha Dog was about the angle of the connectors. They seem less angled than the universal/balanced Mad Dog. Any reason for this? I've come to really appreciate the angled connectors on my LCD-2 and I think it would be nice if the Alphas could also share a similar angle away from my shoulders.

We did a number of experiments on cable angle and felt this was most comfortable.  The cable falls smoothly onto the chest without catching shoulders or creating a lot of "airborne" cable that makes the phone heavy.

Possibly.

Our initial cable options will be:

1) 1/4" single ended

2) 4 pin XLR balanced

3) The 6" Adaptors (for our 4-pin XLR cable only) will be available in October:

• RSA/ALO (Kobiconn)

• iBasso (HiRose)

• 3.5mm single ended

• Dual 3 pin XLR balanced

The adaptors won't be available for the 1/4" cable.  It's easy to get decent 1/4" to 3.5mm adaptors already, and the others are all balanced and require a fully balanced cable.

I haven't finalized cable pricing yet, but the primary Alpha Cables will be up this week.

Dan, speaking of cables, are the connectors you use on the cup side easy to obtain? You obviously order them in bulk, but will custom cable makers like BTG Audio have hard time buying them?

Dan - when will the tour detail for the Alphas be announced please?  Have you finalised your list?

To those who have heard the Alphas already (the previewers as it were) - a quick question for you .......

I've had my V3.2 MDs for a couple of weeks now.  They are incredibly articulate, smooth, textured - there is so much I like about them.  But I do find them (for my personal preferences) really quite dark compared to what I am used to and to what I prefer.  Dark enough for me to question long-term if they are keepers.

Is anyone able to advise - compared to the MD - is the Alpha still a little on the dark side, or do the modifications brighten and balance it?  Is there any dynamic open can that you think is closest to the Alpha sound - this would then give me a benchmark.  If for instance I knew that the Alpha had a similar voicing to an HD600 - then it's a no brainer - I'd hang onto the MD and upgrade as soon as I can.  If however the voicing remains on the darkish side of neutral - then I think maybe they're not really for me.

Any insight will help - thanks.

I have just pulled the trigger on the Alpha Dog with the XLR cable.  Can't wait to try them with my Mjolnir.

Beta Reviewer, and listened to the final versions at the CA Audio Show in August.  To me, yes and yes.  I was going to offer a conditional comparison to the HD650, but with a bit more sparkle - note that this is probably a bit of a stretch, but the HD650 is a headphone I know fairly well.  Still a shade dark as compared to the Beyer/Ultrasone/Grado camps to me.  I'm planning to upgrade my MD 3.2's.  I love the MD's, but when they went from 3.0 to 3.2 everything got better, but the bass got just a tiny bit more prominent than I like.  The AD's cure this to me, along with adding much in the way of air and almost completely eliminate the "closed" feeling one gets with closed phones.

That makes sense. Thanks. Looking forward to it.

Hey Dan, if I was to pre-order one now, when about would you expect them to be shipping out? I'm guessing you guys are pretty backed up in pre-orders right now

Thanks Aaron.  I think this is definitely going to be a headphone I need to try.  Whilst my personal preference is HD600 over HD650, and in the end they may still not be exactly what I want - I'm intrigued enough to take the risk I think.

Really appreciate the insight.

I am the same because I need to nail down how to get the cables.  Dan, please include those options in your order page, as I would love to get everything together all at once.

My reading is that they are not close to shipping the first one...

My best estimate is about 6 weeks right now for orders placed today.  End of month is looking pretty good, but we do have a few schedule risks.  If we slip it shouldn't be much and I'll keep people informed.
