3) I'm looking at the CEntrance Hifi-M8. Will this amp pair well with the Alpha Dog?

I don't have the Alpha Dog yet, so the following are educated guesses:

1) I think the character of the sound of either the Mad Dog or the Alpha Dog is quite different from the DT770, just by being a planar, so I think that the bright/dark aspect is not a critical factor.

2) The Mad Dog is fine with no amp at all, it just improves with an amp, and more so with a more powerful and/or better amp.  Since the Alpha Dog has the same driver, that should also be true.

3) Search the thread, I believe that has been talked about.

1. Is the same connector used in the balanced MD and the AD?

2. Can you post a graph of the AD?

3. Any new pics? I don't think that we have any really good quality shots.

I hope that you and your family had a wonderful vacation and that you are now prepared to work you behind off. biggrin.gif

M-

Same connector, but in a Y configuration.

Frequency graphs say very little about the difference in sound, there's way more here than frequency graphs can tell.  We'll post detailed results closer to shipping.

No new pics yet, we'll update when the production units are ready to ship.

Yeah, it was an AMAZING vacation (but that's all I'll share.  :-)  ).

Thanks Dan and thanks for the info. Glad that you enjoyed your time away. Graphs mean about zero to me...I listen with my ears. I post those questions because members keep sending me pm's requesting me to give them the answers. I guess that they think I have some kind of pull. Oh, how little they know. tongue.gif

This thread is going to be very exciting this month. Now that Dan is back in action, can't wait for people to start taking delivery.

Indeed. My anticipation is definitely building, and I can see myself going for an end-game system by the end of the year.  The AD's are the missing piece.  If I find that they come even close the HE-5LE's, I may put them up for trade toward another TOTL or near-TOTL open dynamic set, and do my best to call it 'done'.

Before you laugh, I have a fairly good track record of finding my end-game set-up: it just takes time.

I'm only chuckling a little. You mentioned finding your end game, but you are still looking. Not that I'm even close to my end game. I like swapping gear. There may not be a total end game for me (or any of us?)

I'm not looking for an end-game. I just enjoy whatever I have now, and sell things I no longer enjoy. I'm thinking about adding the Alpha Dog + DX50/PB2 stack. I think that will be a nice set up on the go.

One question I had from looking at the available photos of the Alpha Dog was about the angle of the connectors. They seem less angled than the universal/balanced Mad Dog. Any reason for this? I've come to really appreciate the angled connectors on my LCD-2 and I think it would be nice if the Alphas could also share a similar angle away from my shoulders.

IIRC, Dan had no other choice for the Mad Dogs, due to the rounded square shape of the molded cups. This was the only place where the connector would fit (happy coincidence!)

Hey Dan! Welcome back! One small question: Will there be a possibility in the future to order a cable with 1/8" connector instead of 1/4"?

And make it mono for a good measure :D

(I wonder what source do you have in mind.)

Guys, this might have been asked before, and I emailed Mr. Speakers but not getting a respond, so here it goes: is the single end cable listed somewhere on their site for the Alpha Dog?  Or is it the same cable from the Mad Dog?  I am asking this because I need both XLR and single end, but from their site under accessories the cables for the Alpha Dog weren't listed, plus the single end cable for the Mad Dog was listed as not compatible with the Alpha pad.  I am debating whether to get the LCD3 or the AD + cables.  Yes I know they are two difference tier and setup, but since there is a closed back version of the LCD3 in the works, I am not so sure any more.

Mrspeakers had confirmed with me that the single ended cable and xlr cable are interchangeable on the alpha dog without any mod. He is flooded with emails recently but I believe you can manually request the addition of another cable in your purchase at an extra fee.

Thanks, I know they are interchangeable, but I just didn't see a way to order both at the same time.

Guess you'll have to give it all to us, then: FR, CSD, THD, square wave, isolation, the works. Oh, and on every measurement system possible. ;)

Kidding aside, I'm actually most curious about any changes in harmonic distortion. Measurements show that's one of the weaker areas of modded T50RPs (not bad by any means, but not particularly fantastic either). I'm curious how much of that can be changed by the housing/damping and how much is just inherent to the driver itself. I'm sure unit-to-unit variance also plays into this to some extent. FR is most useful in combination with other measurements, particularly CSD and THD, IMO. I'm guessing there will be other types of measurements to regularly accompany and expand on these in the future that will better "represent" a headphone's sound as heard by humans.
