I am really curious how these compare to my self modded dbv#3 clones. I would love to see measurements or hear someone's a/b opinions. Subscribing to this thread for sure. Excellent concept, Dan. Kudos!

I do welcome a more neutral sound. I have the excess bass on the Mad Dogs EQed out, but low mids still feel somewhat recessed.

The Alpha Dog isn't a mod per se - it's a T50RP driver with a completely different cup (no foam or blue-tack inside afaik). The AD also has a new mechanism for changing the pads - they are fed onto the cup sort of the same way a tire is mounted on a wheel, but no tool is needed - you twist the pad on and the edge gets worked into the groove a little bit at a time until it is fully on. I have no idea if the Shure pads would be compatible with the new cups, but Dan will be back from vacation next week to field more questions.

I'm definitely with you on these colours options. Would look very classy and stand out in a cool modern way! Although I'm also not with the red wine colour.

You also don't have to buy it in the coolest, modernest way you please.

Seriously, folks. The case on different colors was closed by Dan quite a bit ago. Let him do his thing and then, when the production is settled and he gets a bit bored by how perfect everything is, maybe you can nag him about different colors again wink.gif

If he doesn't get hooked on the next huge improvement in sound, that is. I mean, we're not talking Beats or even, say, V-Moda.

Fair point. I can't see what colour they are when I'm listening to them! :-)

That's interesting because the web site has no upgrade listed for stock T50s, either for Mad Dog or Alpha Dog.  It must have been something that they would do by request via email.  It is yet another kind courtesy by Dan to do so, rather than just make people resell them.

OK,  I think I've been through most of this thread and my scroll wheel is smoking and my eyes are bleeding.

I've been lurking here on and off for years, but have been able to resist the hi-fi siren's call until the AD's came along.  So,  I'm pretty set on pre-ordering a pair and I'm just trying to figure out the rest of the setup.  I needed to go from a TOSLINK 24/196  to a balanced single XLR and there are many, many ways of getting there.

As many others have mentioned,  paper (specs) don't tell the whole story and what reads like a good match of DAC, amp, and cans may not actually SOUND good.

The "easy" solution seems to be to just drop 2x - 3x the cost of the AD's on a DAC and amp and let the ensuing harmonic beauty sooth the pain of the missing kidney that I sold to pay for it all.

BUT,  I'm new and still trying to be as "reasonable"  about all this as possible.

So,  I'd really like to know what setups (DAC and amp) in the $500 - $700 range you all have heard with the ADs (or MDs) that seemed like a good match.

I've read about a few in this thread so far D12 and ican in this thread and neither seem to be (not enough power or don't support TOSLINK in).

Currently I'm looking at the CEntrance HiFi-M8 LX http://centrance.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16189&category_id=264

OR a combo of the iBasso DB2  + PB2 http://www.ibasso.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=71

The iBasso setup seems to put out more juice, but is it "better" juice?

I've read really positive things out CEntrtance's DAC know-how but what I've read about the thirst of the Mad Dogs,  it don't know if the amp will fully saturate the AD's.

I like that both setups are portable and possibly serve at home and away when I upgrade my trust IEM's (se425's) to something from JH audio,  but if there's a desktop setup that you think would better serve the AD's for a better price,  then that would take priority.

OH, one last thing:  (and I hope I'm not reopening an inappropriate discussion)  but I really like the idea of a "raw" / unpainted finish option.   I do like the currently color choice,  but as someone that's been following 3D printing for close to 20years,   being able to see the evidence of how they are made would be a thing of beauty (IMO).

As long as it is equally profitable and doesn't require excess time consumption I don't see why he would not do so. It is probably why he does refuse to upgrade modded ones, because it will require more time to get it tuned correctly.

In that price range the Asgard2 with bifrost (uber) is about as good as you'll get IMO. I heard the AD on several setups and the A2/bf was exceptional. The only thing that beat it was bifrost and a high end vintage receiver.
