I have a pair of Smeggy Thunderpants, not sure how they exactly compare in efficiency to the Alphas (anyone know?), but they are very inefficient at 89dB/1mW.
I bought an E12 to go with the X3 and they drive the Thunderpants very effectively. The sound is comparable (by memory - need to do an A-B) to my Schiit Asgard, which is 1W. The E12 by my calculations puts out around 750mW into 55ohms. Now the Asgard is definitely a budget amp, (something like the Bryston is quite a bit better) but it is no slouch.

I use my Thunderpants on every plane trip, and I am happy to finally have a mobile rig that does them justice. Don't discount the E12 unless you've tried it.
And if the E12 doesn't have enough power and your 'phones are configured as "balanced" (really bridged) then the iBasso PB2 will put out almost 2W into these 'phones.

Dan mrSpeakers):

for those of us that have mad dogs already and want to upgrade I have the following questions:

- does 300 cover all revisions?

- for the upgrade list:

  a) is it a first come first serve:

  b) how can you sign up

  c) are you expecting a long turn around for the upgrades? if so roughly how long?

Thank you in advance. If any of these questions have been answered already forgive me I couldn't find them or must have missed them.

We got a Mad Dog in store, I got excited when it was labelled as Alpha Dog pads! Silly me, of course the phones aren't out yet.

Wow - the main speaker in that article is:

Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society

So, check ACS off the list as another science-free organization... (RD="spokesperson for agribusiness" and epidemiology=voodoo).

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the Mad Dogs (which have the same driver), sound fine with just a laptop, but they sound better with more power, and they sound better with higher quality electronics.

The MicroStreamer has very good electronics (designed by Halverson), so the Alpha Dog should sound very good with it.... but maybe not as good as something costing $1000 with twice the power...

The Alpha Dog upgrade program (and its sign up) does not start until the end of September.   The reason for that is just so that it does not require a long turn around.  It will very likely be first come first serve.

$300 is for Mad Dogs with Alpha Pads.   If you do not have Alpha Pads, add that cost ($60 IIRC).  If your Mad Dogs are Balanced or Universal, then the upgrade is $200 (since those already cost $100 more).

All this is at mrspeakers.com  and in the description fine print of the Alpha Dog Headphone product page.

If I was a girl, I'd give up my virginity right now for a pair.

I'm calling BS on that. If you were a girl you'd be on a webcam making 20 bucks a minute. (Hey we all would)

You don't have to be a girl to do that sort of thing. It'd just be a lot more worrying...
