Few setup and quality questions - Burson Conductor vs PerfectWave DAC?

Thread Starter

Hello everyone.

I had a few questions about my current setup and what I can do to improve it for better sound quality.

Current setup: Wall Outlet --> Generic Power Strip --> Burson Conductor (Amp/Pre-Amp/DAC) with Sennheiser HD 800 --> Generic USB Cable --> PC USB 3.0
Waiting to be shipped/configured setup: Wall Outlet --> Generic Power Strip --> Burson Conductor (Amp/Pre-Amp/DAC) with Sennheiser HD 800 --> Silverlight Starlight S/PDIF --> Hydra X USB Interface --> Silver Starlight USB --> PC USB 3.0

1) Should the stock cable on my HD 800 be replaced? Is this any good? The comparison chart itself makes the stock cable sound awful. http://stefanaudioart.com/headphone%20cable%20Endorphin%20HD800%20se%20Options.html
2) How does the Burson Conductor compare to the PerfectWave DAC (PWD MkII)? Is the PWD unit better than the conductor? Should I sell the conductor and pick up a PWD?
3) Will using the Hydra X with a PWD improve quality, or is the unit better without the USB interface addon? How does the Hydra X as an addon compare to other alternatives with the conductor? Is the Hydra X any good with the conductor?
4) Is there any other products I should purchase or advice you could give to help me improve overall quality?

Any help or input is much appreciated!
Regards,
SecurityBunny

If I were in your position I'd consider the Violectric stack + Audiophilleo 2. I'd think the Perfectwave should be much better than the DAC inside Conductor but it's far more expensive. Again, Negura is the man to ask as he's owned everything you've got and everything you're thinking about buying.

Or Mytek 192 + Violectric V200 + upgraded cable.

Yes. If you'd rather have a bit less brightness more body and bass, go for a copper aftermarket cable. If you want more clarity energy then some sort of silver cable. Personally I don't like the silver cables with the HD800s.

The PWD2 is much more expensive, "only" a DAC/preamp, and clearly better. But this is a never ending ladder in hi-fi. There are MUCH better DACs beyond the PWD2. Starting at around $7-8k. That said the Conductor is good.

I wouldn't use a Hydra X with the PWD personally. The PWD is a bit more analogue sounding than the Conductor and the Hydra is very analogue sounding. Too much of a good thing me thinks.

You may also consider a good power regen and a nice power strip. I would probably change the headphones cables before those.
