In a beautiful varied world (we agree on this part) there does not exist a single cold calculation of cost vs sonic gain. There is a varied number of those calculations (as many as there are consumers out there in the beautiful varied world)

and unless you somehow consider yourself a "reference point" for SQ/cost analysis, you can't possible be serious and believe you are the only one who got this calculation right?

Let me ask a question here:

You can tell the two apart and the HM901 is actually better or is just a matter of taste on different sound signatures, color, etc..?

This is very important.

I can tell them apart fairly easily, especially since HM901 has an very obvious wider soundstage that can be easily pick up even with the same music and headphone. Presentation is also richer and image better resolved on the HM901. The stock X3 also has a warm'ish tone that is noticeable. I did A/B them before.

Just a side note - I mod'ed my X3 with a different opamp a while back. Last week we had a small local meet where we have two X3, one stock and one mod'ed (mine), and we asked people to listen to both without telling them which is which (so it is kind of semi-blind test). Everyone on the meet who listened to both prefer mine, including a girls who isn't really an audiophiles herself but only went to the meet with her audiophiles boyfriend and being asked by her boyfriend to try out both X3. So essentially we have two near identical players with just the different in one chip and people can still tell them apart.

And now the votes are changing. You can't change votes but different users can read posts. Back when nobody posted anything about the topic and it was just a poll. A was by far the highest voted one.

OP should ask this same question 2 months from now and don't let anyone post in the thread. I'll be interested in seeing those results more.

Fair enough - that's how it should be (everyone determines this for themselves and there are no implications that others who spend more are somehow dumb etc - you clarified that you did not mean this so I'm speaking in general as I have seen this occasionally on this forum - good examples of this can be found in few closed Tera Player threads).

Ak120 and iPod 5.5 session today, I struggled to tell them apart. Next week I am going to test dd socket 1. I used er4s and for amp I used MHD q7.

So would you say the 5.5 is under-rated or the AK120 over-rated?

You must be joking or your ears are not working well trying to compare the 5.5 to AK120.lol
How will you react when you hear the Tera?smily_headphones1.gif
Sold the AK120 and bought the TP and cannot be happier with my choice.

I will blame my ears , my ears also like rocoo BA sound a lot more than 5.5G and I think iPod nano 7g is under rated.

1.2K is a lot of money, if you like to lower your bar to reduce the guilt by all means go for it but when amped 5.5G and AK120 do not sound that different. Stand alone of course ak120 pairs a lot better with my ck100pro.

Amped touch 3Gs sound great as well (depending on the amp) but I find the portable banded brick thing very unappealing. Have an AK120 on the way as well. Checks all my boxes.
