To answer the original posting about the Q701.  The X3 delivers more than enough power reserve to drive the Q701 as it does with the K701 and K702.  As for how it sounds, I am still working on the Real World Review of the Fiio X3 and the headphone I chose to setup for the review is the AKG K701.  The original K701 has an exceptionally balanced sound thus it provides me with the details that I can say that will define the review.  Please stay tuned for the review for where I will post the link to in this post.

thanks! I'll wait for the review.

Well, after reading the 15 odd pages of speculation, reviews, and various back and forth about these two DAPs...  I must say its a difficult decision.  With the next step up for both of these coming out sometime this month, I think I should probably wait until they arrive before I make a decision on what to get.  Wish I could find a decent review of the HM-700 to compare alongside these two tho.

Than yes you can, make sure to find a amp that is classified as on the brighter side. I have a Ibasso D42 amp that is on the brighter side and is rollable meaning you can change out the op-amps to your liking. There is a lot of portable amps out there that will make the x3 more to how you want it. None of the Fiio amps will help you unless you want to EQ, and the X3 already has the treble and bass on there already.

So yeah, just do a search for bright amps-portable. Hope this helps.

But the wolfson DAC used in the fiio is said to be on the warmer side as I recall?
The Fiio is on the warm side that is why the want to go LO into a amp that will help brighten it.. I think Fiio's house sound is on the warm side even the X5.

I had the X5 for a while and found it bright and at times harsh, that was using HO only

There are definitely songs (mainly Metal) that will make the treble harsh. This is mainly from how good the instrument separation is on the X5! Overall it is on the warmer side.
