Shure SE846 Impressions Thread - Page 48

truck,

Absolutely agreed, I just wasn't happy with someone beating up on the Etymotic. It's a hugely successful design, created with great science, rigor and discipline, and is loved by many. But you should always go for what sounds great to you; trust your ears, not the specs, the Internet, or other people's passions, marketing or preferences. smily_headphones1.gif

Well guys,

This is my first post in a forum that i feel like i've been a member of for years now. I have finally come here to say thanks for all of the information that you guys post on here and to let you all know that you are all very bad influences haha.

Today i will receive my SE846's and i couldn't be more excited after reading everything on here. I am pretty new to all of this high end stuff and all of the terminology is quite daunting. Late 2012 (i think) i finally made the move to get a pair of 535 red's, they are spectacular, i then ended up getting custom moulds from ACS, which made things even more awesome.

After that having been bitten by the bug that you all have, i started investigating cables. i have ordered a lovely set of OCC silver cables from DHC and they should be here in a few weeks.

In the mean time, i just couldn't help myself i ordered the 846 as well based on the reviews on here.

this should have all been complete in 3 weeks and i'd be happy.... but oh no... damn you head-fiers, now i'm getting ready to enter the world of portable amps as well.

So, i guess this is a kind of "thank you from my ears" and a "leave me alone" from my wallet.

David

The criticism of the Etymotic was harsh. The vintage “item” I'm usually defending is myself, so I understand. These IEMs may be too different for a comparison to be fruitful.

Congratulations, and sorry for your wallet.

I too pity your poor wallet. Take some advice and delete your Head-Fi account and forget you ever heard of it. Head-Fi is truly Dante's vision of the Inferno "abandon hope all ye who enter here".

I have to secretly agree, there's too much fun being had here.

BTW I'd take the SE846 over the Etys in an instant any day, I just like the fact that people here are kind and polite even in their disagreement. All the discussion is in good spirits, and is not the "mine is bigger than yours" type that contaminates too much of the internet.

There are some things some of us will not publicly admit to, such as ahem having spent so much for a pair of IEMs...... [ahem].... biggrin.gif But I can assure you if you love music and good sound, the cost is well worth it!

Copperears, unfortunately I agree but HOPEFULLY the above pictures are the end game for my portable rig. As I just received the RSA F-35 Lightning to pair with the SE846 I think I have found true sonic bliss.

I bought a pair of these brand new from authorized dealer.

but it seems that the right ear has some distortion/static sound.

I don't think it's defective because it's

the same thing with the se 535 I had couple ears ago.

I don't think it's my ears because my westone 4 dosen't have the problem.

tried it on iphone 4 and desktop, same issue.

Just tried the SE846 here in Shanghai with my ZX1 and 901. Here are a few impressions:

  • The comfort and isolation is top notch for my (large) ears
  • At first I was listening with the blue filters and my thoughts were: great bass, nice soundstage depth, but quite veiled in the mids coming from my Hidition NT6.
  • Then I asked to change to white filters and the sound is much more balanced. The veil is mostly gone and the sound is VERY pleasant. Not the most detailed iem out there, but the bass and dynamics are awesome, with nice Shure mids and detailed yet smooth trebble, makes it a great allrounder
  • The 846 pairs wounderfully with the ZX1. Together they make for a top notch portable rig.

I am buying a set of these soon. I will certainly get a pair of DHC OCC cables to make them a tad brighter / more detailed and will have a great pair of universal.

I finally brought my 846s in for repair today. You guys in the US are lucky, looks like I have to wait a month here until I can expect them back...

Thanks Copperears. I hope I take my own advice and walk away from constantly trolling here at Head-Fi and just be happy with what I have. Any advice in that regard?

Heh! Simple! Choose another forum in a different, or even related, subject area, and troll there! Always works for me.... wink.gif

Just don't let it distract you from enjoying where you are right now, though.....

Or, alternately, commit yourself to listening to all of Wagner's operas, all the way through, twice -- that should take a bit. Then top that off with four hours of Rossini's Guillaume Tell. smily_headphones1.gif

As soon as the OCC cable arrives, I'm meeting up with the CEO of Cypher Labs to test out the Theorem 720 DAC/AMP in person. They just happen to be based about 10 minutes from my house. For that matter "Ted the cable guy" Ted from headphonelounge.com also lives in Oregon! I'm in the midst of audio royalty. I'm hoping I don't hear the floor and it's as clean and wonderful as they reviewed on here. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
