Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

Jelt, the man who started this thread, how are you? Great comparisons and thank you for taking the time to do it. What is your current set up with your 846?

It's been a while; upgraditis has been well and truly killed by this iem. Makes coming to headfi a bit boring nowadays.

Most of the time I just listen straight out of my iPhone now for convenience sake (neutron player is better than stock). But then when I want (much) better sound I have lots of sources and amps to roll, keeps things interesting.

Straight out of my hm901 it sounds smooth and refined; the 801 makes the sound a bit grainier. I also like how it sounds from my ttvj mhp (I have two of these awesome babies)- more texture to the voice; my portaphile 627 (all around good performer) and apex slim (very fast and tight sound). I haven't tried my protector in a while because my balanced cable died, but I'm getting the cable fixed and will spend some time with it since that's the only dark amp that I have.

Again, apart from the jump from my phone to the source, which is a clear step up in quality, everything else is just different signatures. Not enough time :)

Nice comparison. I couldn't agree more. To me (I'm repeating myself if you read my review) the 334s are unbeatable when you hit their sweet spot, but the 846s are more consistently outstanding across a wide range of genres and recordings.

Another thing I couldn't stand with the 334: fit. The 846 is super comfortable and has great fit! To me that's the whole point of a uiem; if I didn't care about fit I'd just get a custom. (or in my case, use my jh13s more!)

Do you have a link to your review? I haven't been logging on much :)

I'm on my phone so can't get the full link easily, but if you go to passionforsound.wordpress.com it's there. There's a slightly reduced version here on Head-Fi - just click the link in my signature :)

Nice review. Thanks mate.

I just discovered that my Shures were fitted with the white, not blue, for the past few weeks. No wonder this resonated very strongly with me from Loquah's review:

"
there can at times be a slight edge to the treble that strikes even though the overall treble quantity is definitely not out of balance with other frequencies. This is by no means a deal breaker as 90% of the time I just listen with a huge smile on my face, but occasionally the 846 bites just a little and I have to nudge the volume back a notch.

I'm gonna spend a while with them fitted with the black filters to see if this makes the sound smoother.

For those in the UK, Snugs Earphones can organise a full sleeve for various models such as the SE846 - and there's no import duty and less waiting.

Paul or Emma at Snugs are happy to talk if you call the main number - http://snugsearphones.co.uk/

Interesting on their Website Section for Custom Sleeves, they have lifted the picture right off of Sensaphonics website. BTW the picture of the Custom Sleeve for the se535 Clear Which is a half shell.

You might want to query them on that. There is a SCS maker affiliated with Sensaphonics in Europe  Elcacin  http://www.elacin.com/gb/en/shure-se-custom-fit-sleeves .. Snugs methinks is not. And yet they are clearly using photos of Sensaphonics product Lifted directly form their site Hmmmm

That right there (amongst other things I've noticed as of late) is simply unacceptable.  I would go into further detail, but even that bit of information that you shared should show, quite clearly, that this is a company that shouldn't be trusted.

To say that their website is light on information is an understatement. What materials do they use etc. Their IEMs don't provide specs.

You would think since they saved time by stealing images from Sensaphonics of SCS (for 535) they would have some time to flush out in words details about their product... on their "slickish" website.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.....

You really are paying a premium. haha Luckily, we have an audiologist here in NY that does the SCSs with impressions for $225, although I'm not sure if they outsource the production to Sensaphonics. http://www.musicianshearingsolutions.com/services.html

I've been listening to my 8s mostly from my Chord Hugo, but I'm not quite satisified with this setup. The Chord has a low, but distinct hissing sound with my 8s. From my AK120 the background is completely black. No hissing at all. Problem is that the Hugo is MUCH better in every other way, except for the hissing sound and it's driving me insane! Hehe.. I know it sounds like the biggest first world problem of them all. It's such a pity that the 8s are s damn senseitive. My IE800 didn't hiss and I'm starting to regret that I sold them.

I'm just writing this in case any of you are planning to buy the Hugo for your 8s. If you listen to really quiet music, like piano and cello, I don't think it's a good combination.

8s are very sensitive and I've been able to drive them with every source I've had... One of my favorite things about them.

I also finally decided, sorry Monty, but I'm ordering an ak240. It's just going to drive me nuts knowing there is a "better" AK than mine... I seriously doubt I will hear any difference... But I will have both units at the same time for at least a few days.

Congratulations, you've just been suckered by marketing. :p
