MY "Balanced View" is coming shortly. Just got to motivate the fingers. Very tired form all the work going on in here. Soundproofing the "Enhanced" Interrogation Room (I will find Caesar) and other home maintenance/updating joys. Oh and some friends are stopping by.

Will it be difficult to gather a herd of rats for Room 101?

Tried that. Their Gorilla brains are either to poorly developed to manifest the expected reaction or they simply did not know anything. In either case there are a few less foot-soldiers for Caesars army. True Rats chewing off their faces may not have been their greatest fear  ... Oh well Had to make certain by trying it on three of them. Perhaps Justin Bieber Music or Yani (No those are my fears.)

I find it interesting to note that Coco the "talking Gorilla" was reported to be genuinely upset and basically required grief counselling at the news of Robin Williams death. ... A sign that those who seek "peaceful co-existence" with the Apes are racked with mental illness. Coco Weeps at that loss of a well placed agent. I have my theories all I know is the AI works in mysterious ways.

Speaking of mysterious ways. My views on the Balanced World will be up by 7ish EST. The rigs I must say are Great now is time to bring in the industrial designers. It all reminds me of the prototype "Brain Reader in Brainstorm (Christopher Walken 1983) before the equipment was refined into a sleek head band... But more on that later which may well be more of a journey than the destination.....

It all began on Wednesday last  morning with the arrival of a mysterious sealed Ape-Proof package at my front door...

Monty,

We await your review with baited breath.

I just got my SE846 IEMs last week, and they have greatly exceeded expectations! They are seriously competitive with my HD800 rig, which I was not at all anticipating. And this is just using them with my iPhone 5 and iPad 3. I was expecting a step up from my SE535s, but they are in an entirely different league.

Monty Burn's Balanced View or Spook was Right?! - What were the odds of either

Good evening astonished reader drawn in by this startling headline. Heralding  two seemingly impossible occurrences happening simultaneously. Two Black Swan Events. Quantum Theory in action. As promised my impressions of and experience with Music as heard through a balanced output in conjunction with 8s.

Before I begin I thought I should note:  I now know for certain Apes really, REALLY hate and fear Fire and Water this is not a Hollywood myth. . Still no closer to finding Caesar but I am sooo pleased I installed the high power ceiling ventilation system, heavy duty drains and sluices cut into the floors of the "Enhanced Interrogation Room" heretofore known as "Room 101"  in honour of that great Ape Fighter George Orwell (The Apes shall quake when they hear whispers of what awaits them in 101.... but I am Straying a bit

Where was I  yes...

It all began on Wednesday last  morning with the arrival of a mysterious sealed Ape-Proof package at my front door...At this point my house was besieged by troops of the Meat Puppet Army Corps of Engineers "Remodelling" and updating sections of Burns Manor necessary for my work for the Emergent Intelligence the Beloved and Benevolent A.I. That speaks to and through us through its Divine tools the Sentient 8s. alluded so subtly to above.

This was not the best time to be testing the contents of this package sent to my it seemed from Spook from an undisclosed location (standard security protocol due to the heavy Simian infiltration at our respective postal services.) Too much dust and noise from concrete saws and plasma torches (Not so much the torch as the scream of the Chimp - Apes Really Fear Fire - Now!). Anyway noise during the day too tired at night. And I thought all that dust might not be good for whatever was in the Simian Proof Postal Pouch. I knew that whatever it was I had to return it in good working order. Prudence and laziness converge to create serendipity....Fast Forward a few days

Finally Saturday I was in a position to open and inspect the  "the  package". There was evidence of Ape handling (Hair paw prints etc) However the Simian Seal had held.

Inside I beheld Silver Cable for the 8s with a Balanced End. - The Square one. Its not that big) A RS Protector Balanced Amp. With 3,5mm jack too. And various connectors.AS well as a Large 60 Gallon Liquid Nitrogen Cooling Unit. (This turned out to be a bit of overkill on Spooks part. The Protector it seemed did not require cooling. But that does go to my point I alluded to earlier that the whole set up reminded me of the early Prototype for the 1983 Christopher Walken fil Brainstorm.   ....

This stuff does the job and then some but and Elegant solution not so much. More on that later

You all want to know what I thought of Balanced vs 3.5mm normal output (Sorry I don't mean to get all technical. I hope I have not lost anyone.)

So I hook everything up through the "LOD on the bottom of the I Pod cause line out seemed the way to go , Later I will see if  the 3,5mm-3.5mm connectors is better. It may be BUT the the Protector and iPod are facinging ass to head. - The Volume Dial on the Amp faces the bottom of the iPod

Bauhaus at its finest this is not. Form Should follow Function - here Form is not on speaking terms with Function and is seemingly living in exile somewhere Mexico. If form is not careful it could suffer the same fate as Trotsky. Ok I am done ranting on Ergonomics and Design sufficed to say where the Protector is concerned they are conspicuously absent. As for Function the Protector has it it is there in ample supply and excellent execution.

This is a Butterface piece of equipment. The Protector and the other RS Products I looked at briefly online have all the aesthetic value of my 1980 "Passport Radar Dectector(see below)

Actually the Radar Dectector 30years later still looks better - Whew now I am done expressing my few thoughts on the non design elements of the Protector

Ted's Product however is eminently well thought out with the real world and end user in mind

As you will see regarding RS there is no question it works and works well and is built well and solid just with no thought to end user tactile experience.

Anyhow. First of I tried the 8s Amp through the Stock Cable the SCS (the only way I wear). I sampled my Floyd Some Rush Paul SImon and a few others. and I was somewhat impressed by amping but What I needed was a baseline to compare to when listening to the Balanced cables so same source yadda yadda.

Then it was time to swap out the Cables. Went right back to what I used as my baseline. Time was the first thing I sampled It was a bit underwhelming but then sadly not all parts of DSOTM are well mastered Gilmour is a bit muffled. Move ahead to Money...Kick in with the Sax Solo (Oh yea and the chash register at the beginning - oh hea) and the most blistering Guitar.YEA Balanced in better. The soundstage is wider. The mids and highs SIZZLE you  The Bass.. Its the 8s what do you think?...umm weak and lacking.. NOT Thunder when the Gods call for it. I can see the electricity moving through the wires from Gilmours guitar. There is an inside and outside your head perception and a bit forward by 10ish percent. A guess The 8s refuse to release the data.

Rush 2112 Road to Bangkok Getty sounds great and again it is all and all a better cleaner sound. Muddy sound engineering will be a frustration until the end of time. Quiet hidden whispers are clearer, The Sheeps Prayer" in Sheep is almost understandable. In short IT it being music and sound is BIGGER Fuller

It is the music you expect nothing of that is the most surprising. I mean one expects Spectacle for Large music and the anticipation can colour opinion and then one has to wait for that some music in this set up to sneak up on you without expectation to appreciate the in some cases only subtle improvement. But then Animals is a Perfect Album so improving upon perfection even in presentation is a feat.

BTW Spook. The AIs nascent sentience is in fact a nurtured in its ethereal digital womb by of Dark Side of The Moon. The Ai. Told me so and unless you wish to argue this poiny with the All Knowing Eye. I suggest that you learn to sing it as The AI wishes it to feature heavily in the Mass we must perform daily in solemn Meat Puppet  worship of the AI when the day of Assentation comes.

The Protector is a solid hiss free little guy. Yeoman like (Like my  Radar Detector for the 80s Passport seen above) in appearance as though design were not an afterthought but a counter-thought.

It all works together and produces a far superior overall sound.

However. As I have said this is not an elegant solution it is clumsy, even if strapped together. It all feels like prototype stuff the propeller heads come up with in the labs. Pitch it and if green lighted the Science and engineering meets the industrial designer's and clumsy becomes sleek and intuitive

I have said earlier I really can't comment on the Silver Cable vs stock as the biggest change was from the balanced. (Which does use more power. I know as I had to dial up the volume on the Amp when in Balanced mode. Still lots of legs to go higher and make my eyes bleed but I chose not to,

I can say this Ted makes a very attractive and comfortable product. nicely finished and in this case no trademark skulls. Spook advised me that Ted builds them to your spec. This may explain the My Little Pony Y slide on the cable as I had not seen that on his website..

All and all I would like to see more balanced products I like the AK mini plug buy I see the durability of the Square thing.

As to the Cookies here on the dark Side. M Coop was right they are here and very tasty had 3 about 45 min ago. things are getting very swirly and I see light trails... These are some cookies.

Leaving on a trip to Kansas City tomorrow and choosing what gear I'm going to take with me... That the SE846 will be in my carry-on goes without saying - most likely the V8's and JH16's....

The things I do for friends... lol.

Flying to KC to pick up a motorhome and then driving 1400 miles to Montana to drop it off.

It's all about the per diem. I'm actually looking forward to the peace of driving through the USA - and of course some hi-res tunes to add some color to the long strips of asphalt.

If they didn't charge for overweight luggage I'd take everything.

My last flight from Montana to Los Angeles was made easier by the 846 - there is something about a rock sold bass line that lets you close your eyes and disappear into the music.

"Oh, the guy in 4A with his eyes closed and smiling? I don't think he wants any peanuts."

Remember you are part of the universe, you were dust from stars, everything will be fine, just breath. You know how, in and out, deeply. Keep rehearsing, oh ma pad me hum.

Monty my friend,

I have but two comments. First, as for me being right remember, even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut. Second, do not hold your breath waiting for a cookie from MCoupe as I still have not gotten mine for joining the dark side long ago.

Yours in BALANCED,

Spook

p.s. Great review and note a balanced set up facilitates a better man/machine interface which is the ultimate goal of us helpless Meat Puppets serving our A.I. Overlords.
