I have seen Rush 3 times in concert starting with Hemispheres then Permanent Waves and finally Moving Picture tours. If I could just stand Geddy's voice through a Shure IEM.

Too funny Spook...I am a huge Rush fan as my late brother was way before me.. ( I am 47)... I can handle Getty's voice on studio recordings with my 846...just can't take any live stuff in recent years... so shrill and sad even off tune at times imho!! The magic of the studio covers up all that...I love clockwork angels...just not live!!

I agree with you on Clockwork Angels - studio sounds great.  Then saw them on that tour and Getty was struggling.  Same thing on the live Clockwork Angels.

Never saw them live...but I loved the R30 live DVD... after that...seems like Getty just could not do it live anymore..bought the next few DVD's and ended up giving them to a co-worker/good friend who just wanted them for his collection regardless. Please don't bash me fellow Rush lovers...just my opinion. Still listen to Moving Pictures..Fly By Night and 2112 on a very regular basis after all these years.

Does anyone listen to classical music on their 846s,symphonies especially? Thanks.

I'm thinking of buying either the se846, ie 800 or the w60. I have tried many headphones like the VISO HP50, momentums (over ear), B&W P7, KEF M500, ATH-M50x, and the v-moda M-100's. Out of all of them I have to say that the HP50 viso were my favorite, I never heard any other in ear headphone other then the earphones that have come with the iPhone. Now I plan on using these in ear headphones either strait out of the iPhone 5, iPad, or from the jack input that's available from my Logitech z623 speakers. Should I even consider these in ear headphones if I don't plan on using a separate dac/amp? Should I consider the se846 in ear headphones if I don't plan on changing the stock cable that it comes with?

I think it's just age.  The human voice tends to degrade with age especially if you push it to your limits (like Getty would do).  I still enjoy their music though.  Neil Peart is one of my all-time favorite rock drummers.  Not only are his chops solid, but he tunes and mixes his drums really well too.

Not quite same thing but have been exploring non-vocal jazz recently (Hiromi, some live Miles albums) and yes SE846 to these ears keeping up with the instruments and there is a sense of air. Definitely improve your source though. Been demoing high-class sources recently (write-up in near future). Whilst not impossible to listen to Nexus 5 or iPad mini straight headphone out, once you seen how green the grass is hard not to know the deficiency is always present :-/

Thanks! I listen to a lot of contemporary jazz,Mclaughlin and the 4th Dimension,Christian Scott, etc.,plus everything else from West

African Mbalax to Stones and Zep..Lately I've become interested in classical,Dvorak,Brahms,Debussy,etc..I like to vary my

listening depending on what takes my fancy at the times. If the 846s can handle symphonies, and they're an all rounder, then

they're for me.I'll be pairing them with a Chord Hugo, and using a Macbook as source. Thanks again.

Personally I use the straight out of an iphone 5 and they sound excellent - I think your source files should be 320 but that's just IMHO. They are certainly good without an amp  - no idea re the Logitech speakers. As far as the cable goes, you can read tons of reviews, probably 90% are done with the stock cables. I honestly don't think the cables are an issue at all, Are worried about the sound or ergonmics? If these didn't sound first rate with the stock cables compared to third party cables, I think you'd hear more about it. I don't dismiss cables being able to improve sound but come on, the stock cables are very good with almost all all top tier iem's , the ie 800 cables have been criticized much more than the others due to fit and microphonics

846 sound fine with stock cable out of iPhone or like source.  However, they are sensitive and I would imagine that their might be noise coming from the logitech setup.  If that is a deal breaker parameter, I would purchase from a  store with a great return policy.  I learned the hard way about hiss from my Note 3 due to impedance miss match.  If you need me to check, I have the Z906 store in my attic i can bring down and test.

All that being said, I think the iPod touch 5th gen dac sounds better than the iPhone 5 or 5s.  Second, while an external amp like the RSA products can improve dynamics, the big reason is to go balanced.  With silver litz and balanced cables, I see a DRAMATIC improvement in sound.

Finally, I won't try to dissuade you from IEMs but You have given quite a range of products with different house sounds.  I have 2 of them (846 and W60).  Have you considered picking up 535LTD or W40 as a starting point?  There is a bigger market for these and you might be able to find them used so you can hone in exactly what you want in an IEM.

Good luck.

iPod Touch 5th with silver litz balanced cables out of a RSA amplifier. Bah what does MCoupe know.

Oops that is my set up as well.

I echo my friend's sage like advice. Once you go balanced you will never listen to single output again. I know most scoff when I say this but all I can say I felt the same way until I listened to silver litz out of a balanced amp. I have completely committed to balanced as the RSA Lightning is ONLY balanced out. After owning the RSA Protector which has both single and balanced outs I went all in with the RSA Lightning.

P.S. For those who want a single set up that can be put into their pocket, I agree as you can see with a strip of 3M Scotch Guard (no rubber bands needed) and right angle interconnects I am good to go.

Absolutely you should.  At 9 ohms they were designed to be used without an amp and I think sound better unamped than amped.  And, no, I don't think Shure would design a $1,200 IEM with a garbage cable either.  It's fine.

Spyro. I think the stock cable is nice. It is far nicer than the 535 and 4r cable for sure. I am curious, do you have personal experience with balanced output into a W60 /846? I sent you a Pm. smily_headphones1.gif

Cheers!

My opinion on the stock cable is that it is strong and well built. Can it be made to be more comfortable yes it can but it is still a good cable. Can and upgrade cable such as a Silver/Copper or Silver/Copper/Gold improve the sound? Yes.
