Spring Cleaning - Sleeves sleeves and more sleeves come and get em

Clearing up my closet today and what did I find all my retired and superfluous gear. All my original boxes, cases etc were there. I even found the box for my E500PTH (I had them longer than I thought I thought they were SE530s same IEM early designation) with the PTH neatly placed in its packing foam. Forgot I had it. I may just keep it may come in handy - probably not at least not as long as I have it. in my possession

But I digress, big time. I have also come across in the boxes and spare cases a plethora of never used sleeves in Small and large.

Olives

Soft Silicone

Triple Flanges and

Hard Clear Silicone (designed by the Marquis de Sade methinks) Sml, Med and Large (I think)

If anyone would like some or all them I will gladly pop the in the mail FREE (yes I will even spring for the stamp(s) anywhere in North America. Just PM me

I do not want to appear one day on "Hoarders - Cables, Cords and Paraphilia Edition"

I even found my old Sony D-555  "portable" cd player all pristine in its case along side the original 1982 Sony D-50 CD Walkman in its Lugable Battery case man I am getting old

But I digress ...again.

Sleeves Come and get em

That is awesome news, jelt2359. smily_headphones1.gif

Monty Burns: Sounds like you have some serious collectables there. I used to have a rather UFO like Sony DNE-9 CD walkman. I would love to find another unit thereof, not as a collectable but to use. The sound from this thing was excellent; powerful enough to drive Technics DJ headphones.

I received a new set of 846s (Shure replaced both IEMs) in Janrary, 2014 and I do feel it was a different sound than the originals. The new 846, with the white filter, had a greater tonal balance with an improved treble response than the original. Was it night and day, no but it was a material difference and I would say improvement over my original SE846.

I hear a difference between my recovered (old) set and recently returned new set. I wonder if it's due to burn in, though.

The old one has a more refined sound- less sparkle and slightly less forward. And, surprisingly, the mids are slightly less sweet. The bass is better though, and the sound more coherent. All this is for the white filter.

It could definitely be burn in. Yes, supposedly BAs do not need burn in but I believe the 846 experiences a shift from too much bass to balance after a few hours. I heard that on both sets of my 846.

I guess you never change filters with these things, or, are they removable?

Also, the current trend of (the number of) driver war is unproven and stupid I think.

I agree.  JH and Westone should take the lead from Shure and learn how to improve upon the drivers they DO have.  Quantity does not automatically equal quality.  So, if nothing else, Shure has demonstrated what is possible with BAs.

Great news.

In terms of burn in (both physical and psychological), I am beginning to wonder as well. There has definitely been a shift in sound in the two weeks of SE846 ownership. Bass is just as good but now seems more measured and controlled. I am tempted to switch to the blue filter just out of curiosity.

My IE800s took two months, perhaps even more, to sound their best, with certain vocal highs taking on a kind of "lispy" (for lack of a better word) and oft sibilant quality.

Talk of the ex, they never quite got Guns n' Roses to sound right. Same goes for the IE8s, with or without a Zo2 or Meier Corda amp.

Earsonics (or is it Audio Sonics? - I need coffee!) SM-6s too are reportedly a disaster; another six-driver BA. On the strength of the Se846, less is definitely more. And Now I've gone BA, I ain't ever going back.

Agreed. Say what you will but "Appetite for Destruction" was one of those rare albums that every song was great without a filer song or two. For a few years they were the top concert in the US and could have been huge if personal problems did not destroy them.

jelt2359 -

Went back to the beginning of this thread out of curiosity to see when it was started - Aug 9, 2013.  While I was there, I re-read your original post and a few things grabbed my attention:

This is like a portable version of my Hifiman HE6- not a basshead's choice by any measure, but the bass really can hit home.

I consider myself a basshead and I find that the 846s more than satisfy me.  After owning them for this long, do you still feel this way?  What IEMs would you say outperform the 846's bass in that regard - ones that would satisfy a basshead?

The bright filter removes the punchiness of the bass

The warm filter did not improve the quality or impact of the bass vs the balanced filter- there was just more of it. It did not really affect the treble as drastically as the bright filter affected the bass, though.

I was originally under the impression that the filters had no effect on the bass.  The user's guide also state that the filters do not affect anything below 1khz, however, using the warm filter, the bass, to me, seemed a bit more prevalent, but maybe it only seemed that way with the reduction in brightness (was previously using the bright filter).

Apetite for Destruction set a lot of records in the music industry.  Previous to that, it was Rumors by Fleetwood Mac.  Since them was U2's Joshua tree.
