Shure SE846 Impressions Thread - Page 126

In the case of RW mods it undoes what AK did, not improve on it, just corrects a dumb design decision.  It would cost a few pennies less for AK to not do what RW undoes.  To be fair AK is coming around really slowly.  By the AK480 we might even have a <1ohm output impedance.  And anyone who thinks AK isn't bending people over because they are the only game in town for a DAP that works, sounds half decent and doesn't look like ass, you're kidding yourselves.  That said, AK240, looks retarded :P

I didn't notice any hiss on my pair. In my opinion, zx1 is better than any ak product, and I heard them all incl ak240. And definitely better than dx50 and x5. I didn't have a chance to try 901 though.

Now if only someone would measure the thing so we know if it's <1ohm output.  The AK 3ohm isn't a gamebreaker but if the ZX1 is typical Sony 10ohm... ouch.

The thing is, is there really a merit to spend 2500 bucks on this ugly looking piece of aluminum for driving an 8 ohm multi-armature iem when its output impedance isn't even lower than my iphone 5? The dac is much better, probably, but is that work that much money.

Am curious on the sony product on the other hand. If only this page could be refreshed with the ZX1 results... http://monoadc.blog64.fc2.com/blog-entry-99.html

Gotcha, MK2 is 3, but lots of others that does much lower for your 4 drivers.  I believe DX90 is less than .1.

DX90, X5 and Calyx M are on my to buy list... if only they were ready.

Buy them all and do a comparison review.  :D

Wouldn't be the first time.  Certainly cost less than the amp round up I did.  Less wife agro too since the dining room won't be a wall of amps :P  I've also considered buying another AK to see if the USB dac problems are just my unit or all of them.

Does the SE846 clear cable oxidise over time like the old Shure clear cables for the SEXX5 series?

Totally different, Kevlar.

You get two cables too. Not totally sure why they threw the second one in there.

So does the cables turn green over time with usage from your experience with them?

Haven't had them long enough to know. My guess would be that they're basically the same cable as in the other SE series, all of which turn blue if I understand. Just guessing though.

I bet there's some audiophile somewhere with an argument that blue oxidized cables sound better. lol.
