Shure SE846 Impressions Thread - Page 123

846 sent my LCD-3 out the door.  It's flaws are rolled top end, pretty much par for the course on iems, slightly exaggerated bass, long bass decay and physically large size.  Does it scale to my PWD2/GS-X mk2?  Yes.  Does it sound like crap out of the AK100 mk2?  No.  If the vocals aren't glorious... get a new rig :P

  Jesus, LCD-3?  Sounds like possibly it's your first set of high-end iems?  Sombody said Roxanne, now LCD-3?  This is getting ridiculous.  I haven't heard Roxanne though.

I've had these almost a month before I sent it back, and I didn't think these were that great for the monies.  I can think of many iems that would actually scale with better sources.

I like neutral sound, but not just neutral as I got rid of ER4P(boring).  I'm also into clarity, accuracy, good bass, so phones that are usually used as reference.  They usually scale better because they are transparent.

I also like fun iems, one I can think of that is not exactly neutral I like is TG334.  I had withdrawals after I sold them(I listen to them for hours, it has ridiculous mids), 846 not so much.  Everybody has their favorites.

Try some others, you'll find out there are others that does really well.  I recommend CIEMs.

846 was better than my ER-4PT everywhere, smashed my UM3X and SE420.  What are you using them with?  Might be you need a heavily coloured iem like the 334 to "fix" it.

People like to think of the Ety as the detail and linear king.  The 846 is better in those regards on my rig.  That said the Ety was a lot better than the Westone and damn close to the Audeze minus needing a boost in the 20-100Hz region that was easy to provide with a para eq in JRiver.  If not for comfort I would've likely kept them.

I received a new 846 yesterday. I am hearing obvious distortion in the right earphone. I have heard it on two different systems with both solid state and tube amps. I do not get the same distortion from the same systems using my HD800. I might have a defective unit. If not, does anyone have any ideas about what might be causing the problem? Has anyone else experienced distortion with one earpiece? Thanks for any responses.

846 is an assembly required iem :P  Take the right side apart and reassemble it like you would if swapping the filter.  It's likely not seated properly.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried your fix but it did not solve the problem. I also changed filters and the distortion remained.

Sounds like a defective unit. They did have problems early on with the SE846 and my own unit came with a defective right earbud that did not produce any sound at all. Shure replaced it with a brand new one and it has been working like a champ since. I would contact Shure and let them know what's going on, they will let you know what to do.

I bought my SE846 in Japan in August last year. I came back to England and my right IEM stopped working. Shure UK very kindly replaced everything when they had stock available. Excellent world spanning customer service.

How much better would the AK240 sound with the Shure SE846 in comparison to the iPhone 5S?

I posted this question in the Portable Source Gear section but I didn't get an answer.

A million times better. AK240 and Shure 846 is a great match.

Be like going from the iPhone ear buds to the 846.  That said you can start with something like the iBasso DX90 or Fiio X5 that would also smash the iPhone.
