The question is, will there be any channel imbalance with a new driver on the left and a 2 months old driver on the right. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not sure how anyone would be able to tell you that.

Same chance of imbalance as when they were new.

Thanks Solude for chipping in. Do you mean to say that there will be some imbalance when new and will eventually even out with more use. Also, do you mean to say that it's normal for some units to behave that way as I don't think I heard any imbalance ootb. Thanks again and look forward to more opinion.

Nothing is ever perfectly matched.  When it's way off it becomes noticeable though.

Ok. Hopefully it don't ends up that way. Might try to appeal for a change for both side. Will see how it goes from here and shall update once I get it over it with. Anyway, more opinions would be very much appreciated.

Leo,

I was faced with the same problem a few months ago when my right IEM died. I called Shure and the man on the phone said send in just the dead IEM. I was worried, like you, about a possible imbalance so I utterly ignored Shure's instructions and sent in both. Four days later I had two new 846s. You wanted advice there you have it.

can you hear that rumble on your setup with the white filter?

I haven't tried the white, in a while, I use the black which is for warm.

Thanks for the feedback spook76. Unfortunately from where I am, our locally bought Shure products only have 1 year warranty and they normally replace only the faulty part. We here have to bring down the set personally and will get replacement on the spot once they verifies the problem. But also, there will be exception on a case to case basis. So, I can only hope for the best.

By the way, I think it would be impossible as a matter of physics, for the blue and black filter to have more bass than the white filter. All these filters do is create a physical barrier, and as I understand, physical barriers have a greater impact on higher frequency sound waves. I think it would be impossible to create a physical barrier that allows high frequency waves through but blocks low frequency waves? So the white filter, being less of a barrier, has to have at least as much bass as the other two, and maybe more. Does this sound right?

What's interesting is that adding additional mids/treble fools your casual listening ears into thinking there's less bass.

In that case, I would make the argument that since one side failed it is only a matter of time before the other failed as well. Also, make the channel imbalance augment and obviously listen to both at low volume very carefully before leaving the repair facility.

Good luck.

Bass levels are relative to the rest so more treble is also subjectively less bass since the difference in levels shrinks.  Technically the bass didn't change but it is now less elevated compared to the treble so it sounds dropped.  Your understanding of dampers is correct.

Thanks for the thoughts spook76. Appreciate it. Will try to work on it.

Recently, I have been playing with different tips including Complys, Startips and using plastic adapter to suit tips with bigger opening like ATHs', Denons', UE900s' Supertips and Spinfit tips. I ended up with the original yellow foam sleeves. They give me best isolation, comfort and most air, layering and bass resonance. I thought foam would absorb highs and details like what complys do, but with Shure's yellow foam, they are not affected (or so slightly that I didn't notice). Any 846 owner using yellow sleeves or has better recommendation?

I tried them but did not like them. I do have small ears so that may be the reason. Star Tips for me all day long.

I second the recommendation for the Star Tips.
