BA200 vs R-50?

Hi all,

In the past few months, I have been looking around headfi and the internet for an upgrade(or alternative) to my 1 year old Hifiman RE0s that I currently use as my daily driver. Don't get me wrong, I love how the RE0 presents its sound, especially its ability to extend in the treble region without being sibilant nor does it have any major peaks (to my ears). I do think that the slight warmth of the RE0s greatly aid in enhancing the overall experience that I have with this IEM. As for the bass, I felt no need at all to use an eq to increase the bass quantity, as it is sufficient and enough for my tastes. (although I'd admit that sometimes, around 5-10% of the time, I yearn for that extra bit of bass impact on certain songs)

Moving on to the reasons as to why I would want to seek an upgrade;

I also can't help but think about the RE0s as irreplaceable, knowing that Hifiman has discontinued all previous models in order to make way for the RE400 & RE600. I perpetually have this fear of suddenly breaking them, not due to the build quality but due to my fear of losing a 'piece of history' I just can't stand the thought of not being able to replace them for another RE0 if there is a need to (praying that it doesnt though), as I completely fell in love with the sound it produces. If I were to get either the R-50 or the BA200, they would be my go to pair for commute and travelling, something I do a lot as I am a student, while my RE0s would be safe at home, guess I'm just weird like that huh wink.gif

Now, moving on to the two IEMs currently in focus, the TDK BA200 and the Rock It Sounds R-50. I've read from countless reviews of both IEMs from Techno Kid's appreciation threads of both IEMs as well as from  the multi-iem threads from ClieOS' and |joker|'s (which helped me alot, thanks guys!) I have also heard that both IEM's are able to produce a top tier sound for their price (R-50 for its analytical sound l as compared to BA200's Warm+Sweet monitor-esque sound)

I have also went to audition both IEMs. But I couldnt get to audition the R-50 as I would have liked, as the store did not allow me to switch out from the medium sized ear tips that were ill-fitting to my ears.

I had initially decided to get myself the R-50 (priced at $155 here in SG) as compared to the BA200 (originally priced at $229 from retailers) now, I am able to get the BA200 at a cheaper price ($179) and am now at where I begun. Thus, I am wondering which IEM is more suited for me, knowing that I value treble+mid oriented sound over warmth, but both would be ideal too L3000.gif. I need help in deciding which IEM would be more enjoyable to me in the long run. Direct comparisons if possible would help me indefinitely!

Music I listen to can be found in my profile. Or my last.fm account http://www.last.fm/user/A2theEyeHeych (although I rarely listen to dubstep anymore)

Thanks in advance.

If only I could find a way to buy both without breaking the bank...

I was in your shoes until yesterday. My list of choices were as follows:

  1. VSonic GR07BE
  2. TDK BA200
  3. T-Peos H100

I finally got the T-Peos from lendmeyourears because:

  1. It can be worn over ear or cable down
  2. The built quality and finishing seems to be better
  3. It has a Hybrid BA/Dynamic driver - new to me
  4. First IEM to be certified "Golden Ear"
  5. That box.

Interesting. I have heard the H100. But I prefer an analytical type of sound. H100 sounds too V-shaped for my order preferences.

Then my advice would be to avoid the BA-200. It's boring to my ears and has a severely rolled off treble.

I have not heard the R-50, but I own the B2, which uses a similar TWKS driver. Supposedly, the R-50 is tuned more towards the mids, while B2 is tuned more towards the upper mids/treble and aggressively so. If you want analytical sounding phones that pick up almost everything, are fast and have good enough bass, consider the B2.

I'm a BA200 owner and I will highly recommend it to you. :) IRRC, when i tried R-50 before I feel like the mids are recessed and It's kinda boring to listen with. The BA200 has a warm and sweet sound and a satisfying bass amount but not the bass for bassheads. The sparkle of every instruments, everything you'll hear in BA200 sounds real.

I just got the H-100 yesterday, Out of the box, it has a very V shaped signature with very little mids. (this is based with no burn-ins and hoping that helps). I don't like the V shape signature at all. I would suggest you get the BA200 as I wish I had got them instead.

Thanks for all the input guys. But I'll be only limiting my search to the two phones and after listening to them again, I think I prefer the R-50. It sounds somewhat similar to the RE0, my current IEM. So I'm leaning towards that for now.

I felt that, after auditioning the BA200, it sounded dull and lacking that lively quality which I think has to do with the treble extension that I enjoy from the RE0s. Although the bass impact of the BA200 was greater than the RE0, the RE0 still has satisfying impact and quality so it really isnt an issue to me anymore.

The H-100 is definitely out for me that is for sure. I never really fancied a V shaped sound sig.

I might be getting the R-50s earliest next week.
