New HD598 user from South Africa

Hi guys, as the title suggests, I just made the upgrade from 439 to 598. I'm currently running it straight out of my iPhone or laptop's headphone port. I am currently looking to improve the sound coming out of the laptop and, if possible, the iPhone as well. Although portability is not an issue. It's not a latest model laptop so I doubt the onboard soundcard is anything to write home about. Is there any device I can connect to the laptop to improve the sound quality? Let's say $100 budget.

Hello!

HD598 is rated at 55Ohm so damping factor should not be a problem and it can be easily driven with any source, even with my iNano 3rd and it plays pretty loud! I personally do not find any needs for any amp upgrade nor DAC! Maybe save up more and go for tube amp or some other better headphones?

I have actually tested the HD598 with an amp and it does not change much to make it worth the upgrade in my opinion

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the reply Billson. Quick, efficient and to the point. Confirms what I thought. I'll research tube amps shortly. For now though, enjoying the beauty of proper headphones. No doubt I'll delve into the audiophile world and upgrade these in as few months.

Thanks again

Look into the Dragonfly as an all-in-one amp/DAC option for your laptop if you're worried the sound card may not be up to par. I believe it sells for $250 new, but I've seen as low as $170ish on the forums. Unfortunately, it will not be similarly compatible with your IPhone. It's less for the amping, which the 598 does not really need, but the DAC could be a noticeable upgrade.

iPhone 4 or iPhone 5?

Fiio E07K, USB DAC amplifier. $90

You can connect the E07K's USB to the laptop, use both the E07K's DAC and amp.

you can at least connect the E07K's amplifier to a iPhone 4 and maybe the DAC and amp to the iPhone 5.

iPhone 4, btw, $100 was just a guideline. It could be stretched a bit. Thanks for the reply. Would E07 MAKE A noticeable difference though? I'm also looking at a Bravo Ocean tube amp to use at home. Any thoughts on this?

I'm having a look at the Dragonfly now. It does seem to make sense and closer to what I had in mind. I'll be in Malaysia next week and hoping that Jaben allows me to test out some amps in store. Thanks again guys

Hello Jezza184!

Your welcome and I am pretty sure that the Jaben will allow you to test those amps!
