  Hey Guys,

Also on the topic of tubes we still have a good supply of these NOS JAN Phillips 6V6GTs. price is per pair tested here using our Amplitrex AT1000 so no duds. These I bought new in box in bulk and cryo treated the whole case in my shop, full immersion in LN2. These are tubes are a fantastic match for the ST6.

PAM005 x2 on the PS500  nice.

Cheers guys.

Sorry missed your post.

So the JAN Phillips 6v6 are really really sweet sounding vs the new modern tubes, so notable texture and hair on the beast. OB2s? Sylvania green lettering ones.

PAM005 I have a PAM233 and love it sold all others and then saved up for it, now I am done for life with it!

Hi Ken,

More or less i did the same, sold some watches (only kept the first watch my wife gave me ) and bought 005. i think I'll remain an happy owner of this masterpiece of enginering. Same with your Studio Six.... it's a memorykeeper for me!

I might have to give them another run now I think of it. What I really need is a tube complement that is a touch warm in the bass. I have tried various tubes that gave a touch of warmth but none that did it in a very satisfying way, without losing dynamics a bit too much.

Mullard never actually made a 6V6. There are NOS labeled Mullards, but they are rebranded and could have been made by anyone,

The current "Mullard" reissues are of course Russian.

Interesting. Didn't know that

I do have Mullard 6V6 - but compared with Bendix 5992 for example, sound is more soft (less defined). What sound are you looking for?

I don't know. I've using the s6 for a month but i think the amp and/or the stock tubes only settling just now. Besides, the amp is really, special. I always forget about the time when listening to it. Maybe it's the music(i always using my favourite cds for new equipment). Maybe it's the tubes combination(lucky try?), rca 6sn7, Westinghouse 6v6gt, mullard ob2 And sylvania gz34. So very musical and very enjoyable. You can see the tubes aren't anything special but they do sound so great.

Anyway i might still going to get the mullard 6v6gt. They might sound slow or muddy but i want my tube amp to sound tubey. I rather have it overly tubey than clean ss sound.

Changing GZ34 rectifier does mean a lot. Look for NOS Philips or Mullard! If interested in an affordable GZ34, there's a Dutch company (acoustic-dimension.com) selling these tubes for about EURO 100,=.

You want a British 6V6, try a Brimar. A bit "tubey" for some, but a classic, rich, almost technicolor mid-range that is the essence of what many people seek in a tube.

I may be the only one here, but I am not a fan of the Bendix 5992. Compared to something like an RCA black plate, it's got a sort of hard, "steely", almost solid-state edge to it.

The most common NOS are of course the JAN Phillips. These are the survivors of one of the last large tube buys of the US military in the 1980's. They are good and very rugged tubes, better than any modern production I've heard. However they are not the equals of the better brands from the "classic era" of tube production (self defined by me as 1935-1965).

There are tons of great 6V6 and a lot of sonic variation. Few tubes are more fun to roll.

I'm a fan of the French Mazda and Visseaux. The reference classic is of course the 40's-50's RCA  black plate.

My $.002. YMMV.

Agree about the Bendix, but still a very detailed sound! You've got to try Toshiba 6v6GT also.... Great sound! I also have Toshiba 6SN7 in first in line. But with Studio Six you can't go wrong that quick!!! I even did try Mullard GZ37 (indirect heated) instead of GZ34 (direct heated) and still Studio Six produces a beautiful sound. Call me a fanboy !!!
