Newbie Alert! I need a new phone and Bad! Please help!

Currently I am still using my Droid X (They promised me lifetime unlited Data at Verizon and they are now trying to back out if I change phones so I have been hangin on like grim death) and it its barely does anything I ask of it within 10 mins, especially call somebody.

I am just beginning to tip my toes into the amazing world Audiophile Headphone listening (I was once long ago a budget Audiophile Speaker guy (Gallo Nucleus Solos /Muse 160/ Pss500/ Arcam 9 CD) but my outfit has long since been sold). In the Welcome Newbie section someone was kind enough to point me towards picking up a pair JVC HA-s500 for portable use and despite my gawd awful Droid X source I love the headphones and am constantly shocked by the price/performance ratio. On a wonderful suggestion I also picked up a pair of AKG Q701's that I use with the headphone jack on my Outlaw 1050 amp sourced by ripped wavs (or HDtracks wavs) streamed via s/pdif from My computer. I have been extremely pleased with the massive performance per $1 upgrade I have received from these purchases.

So I come back to my original question for you the very helpful and knowledgeable folks at head-fi. Seeing how streaming audio from a phone to a good external DAC is still not possible from a phone right now what phone should I buy to maximize my listening enjoyment. I have heard talk of Wolfson Dacs in some models but I'm not sure which ones and I'm am currently a little overwhelmed with info. I wish could bypass the whole issue and buy a Astell & Kern AK120 and use a phone for a phone and an audio source for an audio source but that is not in my budget sadly. Given no other requirements what phone should I buy if it is going to be my primary portable listening source (primarily with the JVC HA-s500s).

As always thanks for your time and expertise.

regards

jeff

If I understand the situation right, do you mean they'll give you a new phone but no unlimited data anymore? Does that only apply if you get the new phone from Verizon, and also is your unlimited data plan fast enough right now? Because if that's the case you can just cough up more for some Android phones off Amazon that have the original OS with no carrier-specific modifications to it. (Does the S3 work on Verizon? I'm not sure, my family in CA are all on T-Mobile because my aunt works there, and all I'm sure of is the iPhone doesn't work with it)

Of course, they'll cost around $600 since they aren't carrier-subsidized.

The Ibasso D42 Mamba also comes with an OTG cable already, you just need to get a phone that works with USB Audio through OTG cables. Some Androids have some host protocol limitations due to hardware, while some just have software problems so you might be restricted to USB Audio Recorder Pro as a music player. S3 works fine with nearly anything, as long as the whole DAC is powered by its own PSU or battery (ie some DACs use 5V coming from the USB to power the USB receiver chip, and sometimes, the DAC chip/s as well).

I'm not sure how much voltage or current is enough for those JVC's, but I was satisfied enough with my S3 driving a K550, at least when considering it's a phone (not sure yet if I'll get the K551 in white to match my phone, or X3 and the black K550 and just coil the longer cable around something). If I'm sitting long enough I still have an Ibasso D-Zero here (assuming my cousing doesn't take it back) and during a power outage I can ignore the minor weaknesses on how it drives my HD600, and maybe use that with the K551 too if I'm on a plane for example.

Yeas they basically said that to get a new phone at the upgrade discount price I needed to geta new phone plan and unlitmited data is no longer and option. There were unclear as to whether I could add an unlocked phone to the unlimited plan or whether I had to pay Verizon's full price. My phone is 3g only so 4g would be nice be I would prefer a good sounding phone to all else. I checked out the Amazon unlocked S3's and they range lot. The Galaxy Mini S3 I8190 in the $280's to the other S3's I9300 and I747 up to $430+.

I could also jump ship to sprint that has lifetime unlimited Data now since my 2 years is up but my wife is still tied to verizon for a year. I have heard talk of the "original" Galaxy S being good sounding and findable at reasonable prices. Are these the Fascinate, Mesmerize, Showcase, and Stratosphere or just the international unbranded GT-I9000 series? Cause those I9000 still don't seem that inexpensive unlocked.

Thanks.

The Verizon GS4 also works with some USB DAC's. The E17 being one of them.

I'm not sure how their policies are, but I suggest you ask in mobile phone forums regarding the use of unlocked phones, because there could be some fine print in your contract (you still have the copy?). Unless such is stated, they shouldn't be able to stop you from using whatever phone you want to use. I mean, what if you get mugged after a month with a new phone? Do you just get a new contract then even before they made their subsidy back on the 24mos with that other phone, or are you going to pay them cash for the 23mos left on the stolen unit?

In any case, just to share an example, the last phone I bought was a Motorola Startac III. After that my brother just hands me his old phones (I'm more into blowing money on audio), then when he joined my parents in California, they got a family plan. Everytime they're offered an upgrade, they get a new phone for everybody,  but they give me the old one to my Mom and one of the new ones goes to me. My carrier over has no issues with my using an old smartphone. (I do take issue with a fraudulent charge for a Galaxy Y and a second line to my account, and they can't even show me the docs that I supposedly signed at a store on the other side of the Metro area that I don't go to, and ^$*%^%^!!! people in the store or the helpline all claim they can't remove it from our damned account. f it's still there by next billing I'm getting our NTC involved in this dispute.

AFAIK, the Galaxy S3 mini doesn't have the same flexibility with digital audio through USB OTG. Check the thread I linked above for compatibility if this feature really is important to you. As for the sound of smartphone straight out of the headphone out, I actually like my S3 (and this is the one with the Qualcomm chip) with the IEMs I have over my old (and busted) Galaxy S. Technically, I can concede the original S is better, especially if you root it (enable DAC direct output, etc), and it was great with the Westone2; however, the (cheaper) IEMs I have (M6P, CX300II) don't really need that much better amplification since they're efficient enough. Also, while the original S may sound full-bodied with the Westones, they make the cheap IEMs sound too bassy, where relatively thinner sound on the S3 cancels out the bass bias, especially on the M6P.

Oh and the bundled S3 earphones aren't too bad either, so now even if I forget my M6P's in another bag, the stock headset is in another, so I always have an earphone with a microphone on it.

I have talked to verizon and they have said that if I do not use my "upgrade" I can keep my Unlimited Data and this includes older and unlocked phones. So for fun I purchased a Cheap used Samsing Galaxy S Stratosphere with a new unused sim card that is ready for verizon hook up. I figure I would try and see what I could do with root and voodoo and if it does not work out to my satisfaction then I can still bite the "limited data" bullet and use my upgrade for a current phone like the Galaxy S3. We will see how it goes. Thanks for all the help!
