Hi folks,

Have been lurking for a few weeks and have taken the plunge to join the forum...k701smile.gif

I'm no expert at this genre of Hi Fi I'm afraid!

Though I do have a decent Hi Fi set up, a good pre-amp (Musical Fidelity MVT), solid state amplifier (Musical Fidelity P270-2, 2x 135 wattts Class A), French floorstanding speakers (Triangle Ventis 222), and fancy cables along with an upgraded Technics 1210 deck.

My headphones, that I've had for a a fair few years now are standard a Sennheiser HP25-1 model.

I also picked up off a U.K. Hi Fi Forum a couple of years ago a mint pair of classic Yamaha Orthodynamic HP-1 headphones (nice looking cans), from a guy in the business who had hardly ever used them from when he originally purchased them back in the mid 1980s, hardly ever used them myself up to now as well to be honest, Sennheiser's all the time!

I listen to my music at home through the stereo, and through a Sony Xperia S phone when on the move.

Looking to move up the food change in the near future. Sennheiser models are high on my list, such as the HD 600, HD 650. I'm not sure how these two models would fair going straight in to the Sony phone!

Also, noticed the Customcan HP 25-1 II upgraded cans for £199.00 in plain black. Has anybody got to grips with these, and if so what are your thoughts, how do they compare to the standard 25-1 II model?

My budget would be up to between £200.00 -  £250.00 ($325) maximum for headphones, new or 2nd hand, and later on maybe around £100.00 - £150.00 ($225) for a separate portable amp to go with the phone, also new or 2nd hand.

Look forward to future reviews, and some help for a novice in the headphone world...

Regards

Mark

Welcome.

Both the HD 600 or 650 require a decent (or preferably better) amp.  They will not serve you well (if at all) directly out of a phone or other portable device.

Thank you for the info on needing an amp for the HD 600 & 650 cans, food for thought... Maybe the Customcans HP25-1 II upgraded phones will be the best all round option (home and out on the road) contender! Any other models/makes of phones people could suggest would be much appreciated.

Not familiar with those, as they are apparently unique mods to the Senn HD 25-1 II by a UK company.

The stock Amperior is an outstanding portable can.  As such it is closed--in contrast to the open HD 600 & 650.

I also like the Sony MDR 7520 for home and portable use.  It has a detachable cable and will accommodate 1/8" male to male cables for portable use.  I bought mine from Monoprice.

I don't know the UK prices of any cans mentioned.  So you'll have to check if they fit your budget.  In the U.S. the Amperior and Sony both would--or at least be very close.  In fact I just got a refurbed Amperior for $130 shipped.

The Customcans HP 25 models have the following work done to them, along with an upgraded cable added.... They have uprated damping material in them which helps them sound a bit more open. Then we add mass to the rear of the driver and the diaphragm enclosure to help direct more of the energy from the driver into producing sound rather than vibrating the casing, this cleans up the low end and helps them reproduce even lower frequencies without the bass muddying up the mids. The standard steel cable is then totally replaced with a hand braided SPC cable which really brings out the detail in the mids and highs....So for not too much more money, could possibly be a good upgrade on a standard issue pair!!! Also Sony CD900ST Digital phones are in the same price range as the Sennheiser 25-1 II model.

What are people's views on how these two compare, are they very similar, or miles apart in presentation?

They are miles apart in their intended customers.  The Sony is a pure studio can--excellent neutral (some might hear it as dry) sound--but not especially comfortable for longer listening sessions.  The non-folding Sony is bigger.

Once again KG Jag thank you for your feedback and knowledge regarding the phones I've asked about.

Although you have not heard the upgraded HP 25-1 II model by Customcans, regarding what they have done to the headphones in their upgrade path, do you think they will be a strong contender in the $250 ball park for mostly portable (occasionally at home) headphones?

Hearing them is the final exam.  One I can not (yet) give.  I can't even see or hold them...only pictures.

The promotion looks good.  So yes....IF they are what the company says they are.

After having a dig around on the site, I see that a few people like the Denon AH-D600 headphones for home, and when out and about. They seem to have come down in price recently, still a little bit above my budget, but could go the extra if people thought they a top contender in this price range $250 - $300.

The more you dig around on the site and read reviews, the more you begin to lose the plot on what to go for, guess this is normal for new members, right!.....confused_face(1).gif ksc75smile.gif

The (new) Denons are lifestyle and at least moderately bass oriented cans.  That is a significantly different sound signature that is delivered by the Senn--at least unmodified.

By 'lifestyle', regarding the Denon phones, do you mean for the hipster's and folks under 30 perhaps...LOL!

Yup--except the term "hipster" originated when folks now at least twice that age were said to be one.

From reading a few more reviews I'll probably stay clear of the Denon D600 phones, sounds like the bass dominates their sound footprint too much!

I want something that is good out on the street, but has enough quality at home to compete with my Triangle Ventis 222 speakers (or at least get close to them).

KG Jag,

Have you any experience of the modified Fostex T50RP phones done by ZMF (V1 & V2 models), or the Mad Dog modified version.

These also might be something I'd wanna put on the shortlist of contender's!!!
