Hifiman He-400 or He-500? - Page 30

What I can definitely tell you in terms of good amp pairings with the HE-500 as well as HD-800 is my Violectric V200 amp, I use it coupled to the V800 DAC and the combo is even powerful enough for the HE-6 should you decide to get it.

But it pairs absolutely beautifully with the HD-800.  Before purchasing the Violectric I also tried the Burson conductor with these and they were just too harsh for my liking.  I  gave the T1 a listen but didn't purchase it, the treble didn't sound nice to me, a common issue with the Beyerdynamic cans (the DT-880's in 600 ohm were my first 'serious' headphones, still own them and for the money they're very hard to beat but the T1 didn't offer enough extra value -to my ears- compared to the Sennheiser and HifiMan offerings).

Yeah I'm leaning to the hd800 because I always wanted to own one for the longest, one thing I'm afraid of is I won't like the built. I thought the hd700 felt cheap when I was able to have some time with it but I think I will appreciate it for its feather weight and comfort to offset the he500 for those days something lighter in both physical and sound. Compatible amping is the one of the things I'm not happy to think about. When I think about it now, I should of bought an emotiva x100 for the planars and buy a more expensive amp for the rest. I look into the v200, thanks.

^ I was in your shoes not long ago.  But now, I am done.  Emotiva for HE500, Woo WA22 for incoming HD800 and others.  End game?  :p

I can get a hold of an HE-6 next time we hang out. That plus my HD800 should answer any questions you may have about the sound.

I think the HD800 needing an expensive amp thing is somewhat overstated, the HE-6 has an infinite ceiling, but it likes 5000mw, which only certain amps can put out. Hifiman's own HF-5 isn't even that expensive really, and it was made to pair with their cans. I do like the Lyr with HE-6 so it's perfect that you're looking for one.

That being said even with the Asgard II there wasn't anything I plugged into it that it couldn't comfortably power with a low noise floor, 800, LCD-2, HE-500, HE-5LE, and HD-600.

I think I live on the wrong side of the country!

So jealous of your gear hahaha

Ha, depends on how much you are willing to spend.

I think there is a big step up in tone and depth in the HE-500 but you have to be able to afford the £300 more. I personally think it is worth.

If anyone is interested I recently tested the whole range and blogged about them.

That will be awesome if you can get an HE-6 so we can compare them all at the same time.

Similar to what I'm plotting. In the next calendar year I want to pick up the HE-6, HD800 and the alpha dogs for the workplace. Probably get the Emotiva to go with them.

Too bad that is a way off. Interested to compare them all one day.

On the topic, heard my first HE-400 the other day. Very very nice, the bass was fantastic, one of the very best I've heard. From what I heard A grade value for the cost for a EDM listener. Was listening to Justice +, Noisia Split the Atom and Infected Mushroom Vicious Delicious.

I felt that it got pretty close to the HE-500 in many technical regards except the mid range, which we all know about.

What didn't you like about the midrange?...

Just the upper mid's recession. On a few rock tracks the HE-400 seemed to be a bit lacking upper there for the top ends of distorted guitar/soloing etc. As a result the treble seemed a little tizzy with cymbals and also electronic treble effects being a bit hot I guess.

Mind you this was stock pads. Take the opinion with a grain of salt.

Oh I misread the above post. I thought you said you didn't like the he-500 mid range. Oops.

My god, I just began listening to Infected mushroom and all I can say is WOW. It's almost as if they are creating these songs SPECIFICALLY for the HE-500! Everything synergized so well, and the songs all sound speaker-like and 3-d. Best EDM music (or whatever it is) I've heard on the HE-500 so far!
