Comparisons: 33 of the Top Closed/Portable Headphones Around - Page 27

I think all manufacturers can make a "neutral" or "flat" headphone, but from experience they know that most users prefer a "presentation" that will appeal more to them.
People like different things like:
Increased bass response,
Increase trebles response,
Increased detail,
Soundstage difference,
Forward or neutral or laid back,
Size, weight, portability,
Etc.
So it's hard to please everyone.
Thats also why no "one can" solution is optimal, rather a compromise..
This is why all of you will keep emptying your wallets for the life of this hobby...
Look at me I spent over a thousand on an w3000anv and all my other cans combined plus amps over my short history here easily over thousands more frown.gif
Time to open your wallets also I won't feel so bad ....
Muuaahhahahahahaaa!

Bowers & Wilkins just launched the P7 - a over-ear addition to their line-up.

I really hope the change of ear pads gets rid of the bass hump and opens up the soundstage.

Might make an interesting addition to the review.

Beautiful looking headphone.  Veeery pricy though.  I doubt it will loose the bass hump.  I'd prefer to get some less mid bass and upper bass, but the p5 wasn't horrible.  I'd looove to see the kef m700.  Imagine a KEF M500 with a huge sound stage.

So I auditioned the KEF M500 today.

I have to say, I'm not entirely certain I'd put the sound quality above the Momentum. It certainly has more engaging and textured bass, but the I honestly felt that the mids were bit hollow and cold.

It was a very interesting listen to say the least. It had a very engaging quality to the sound presentation that was unlike any other headphone I've ever heard.

I think this must be some clever trickery with the ear pads - which by the way are PHENOMENALLY comfortable - simply plush feather-weight on your ears.

But more to the point, I felt the sound presentation was done this way to sound more like LOUDSPEAKERS, which is hardly surprising from a loudspeaker companies very first headphone. (first one, right?)

To put this more clearly, I felt the soundstage was VERY wide - imagine two pringle cans on either side of your head - that would be the width, but also a kind of narrow quality that didn't go much forward or back.

Comparatively the Momentum (as that's my portable headphone of choice) has more of small size salad-bowl size soundstage. So not so wide, but a better idea of front, back, up and down.

I've heard good things about the m500. I auditioned the K550, Momentum, and 7520 and for me, hands down, the 7520 was the winner.

That's not the first time I've heard someone sing the 7520's praises. I wish I could actually find it for audition somewhere.

Really worth trying to track these down. I think it's a mistake to lump these in with the other $300 portables. This is a full size headphone with angled 50mm drivers that happens to be semi-portable. I think the reason these kind of get lost in the shuffle is because of the Z1000 which is now discontinued.

Or because it has been geared to that "Professional/Studio" sector of business (i.e. the 7520s are always being sold on stores like Musicians Friend, American Music Supply, ZZounds, etc. etc.). I recently bought another "Studio" headphone, the Yamaha MT220, and IT IS AWESOME although it does have kind of a bump in the highs... would definitely love to try those Sonys...
