Yes, definitely an upgrade in all areas you mention. I listened to the MDR-1R over the weekend and it's nice but too tipped up on both ends for me. The 7520 sounds like a full size headphone, not a portable.

That's because it is a full size? It certainly isn't intended to be used as a portable, and it doesn't fold. Not that that's gonna keep me from using it as a portable if I do get it :) Will see though. The earcups do look elongated, so it might just be what I'm looking for. And I wonder how it compares to the Z1000, which has the same specs, but apparently a different tuning in terms of overal sound signature. Perhaps I should try both and see which one I like more? :)

Yes, it is a full size headphone that some of us crafty head-fiers have adopted as a portable.

So are the pads on the 7520 made of real leather? Or is it pleather?

On some of the pictures I saw it almost looks like the drivers are angled. Is this the case with your headphone?
 
By the way, I couldn't resist and I went ahead and ordered the 7520 AND the Z1000 :) Will see which one I like better. Will be comparing them to the Focal Spirit Classic as well. Hopefully I will finally have found my headphone, but I'm not holding my breath for it :)

Good call! Be sure to post comparison impressions. Yes, angled 50mm drivers. Comparing to the new Spirit Professional would be good as well.

I'm not seeing any stores yet that carry the Spirit Professional that also have a decent return policy. So far I'm only seeing stores that say that you're not allowed to use it, only look at it

(how the hell am I supposed to know if it's a good headphone if I can only look at it). So yeah, I'm not gonna give those stores my business :)

Oh well, what d'ya know. I see that one store has the AKG K545 in stock now, and it's in the city where I live :) Retail price is € 245. Hmmm

Nah, I only try to deal with stores in the Netherlands. Amazon would be too much hassle, and then sending things back would be a bit expensive. And in the Netherlands you have some legal protections as a consumer. When ordering online you are legally allowed to return an item for a full refund within 14 days, no questions asked. Stores can make some exceptions for certain products though, and some stores make exceptions for headphones because of hygiene, and others don't. So it's a matter of looking around and reading the fine print everywhere :)
