yeah  I should have kept that one out as a lot of factors can get into play. sometimes the impedance changes also, but there is no reason for the higher gain to be better. different yup, better I fail to see a reason why. usually it's just a lower s/n ratio.

This challenge I find quite fascinating (but I wont suggest to anyone that they send the IEMs to Japan -- maybe if someone comes to visit it'd be interesting to try). I did want to point out something though: UERMs, though they are $999, are hand-made by half-a-dozen people (or so, I forgot the exact number, but it may be higher) custom moulded and tuned to a person's ears to ensure they are consistent in how they sound, whereas TF10s were mass-manufactured. Apologies if someone else has mentioned this.

I think even the universal UERM sounds noticeably more realistic overall than the TF10...As a matter of fact, part of the reason I rant about wanting to buy a universal UERM is because I liked the sound so much that I don't want to buy the custom only to have it sound different!

The custom and the uerm that was provided here sounded pretty similar

"Pretty similar" isn't good enough for a whole paycheck for me :-/

Could you also link me to the exact Equalizer app you're talking about so I can assess the equalizer parameters it has available? Not sure I'm looking at the right app.

edit: is this the one?

So right now it has 7 peaking filters but no shelf filters?

Count me in also!  I'm very curious how the UE700 would do with good EQ.

Also, is it too late to get in on the UERM vs TFRM?  I'm curious how they compare.

Sounds fun. I was thinking of starting an ex85lp vs. er4s tour. :-P I have a sweet eq I made for it that sounds really good...

Just want to update you guys on the UE700s. I received them yesterday. However it may be some time before I can finish the preparations for the tour. Could we have a show of hands again for the budget IEMs vs UE700 tour? Please list:

-location (US only?)
-model of android device (if any) (rooted? V4A already installed?)
-windows computer (if any) (what version? Vista and 7 can run Viper4Windows)
-any headphone amps that could be used with the above if necessary

and we'll see whether we need to ship a mobile phone with the tour (increases shipping cost and complexity) or just the earphones with associated impulse response files will be okay.

Just for clarification, the challenge isn't to make the UE700 sound better with a good EQ, but to make Joe's cheapo DD-based IEMs sound like the UE700.

@Joe
I'm in Austria (EU).
Can't root mine (company policy), but can borrow a rooted one.
Windows 7 laptop.

Sorry, I'm out.  I much more interested in a low tiered EQ'd to UERM.

Everybody is. Please understand that I've had my UERM on the original tour for almost a year. I'm simply not willing to let go of them again for the sake of a claim that I don't believe in.

That said, I'll stick to my promise: if Joe's digital compensation turns out to be really as good as he claims and succeeds in mimicking the UE700, I'll send him the UERM next.

Update: here's my new thread and writeup on Joe's digital acoustic compensation wizardry:

The premises have, ahem, changed. ;)
