The $999 vs $99 Challenge Tour! - Page 27

OK guys, the tour is back up and running.

An apology is owed to the participants. There was a slight miscommunication , where one of the participants wasn't aware of the time limit due to him not being an active member of this site. This caused the iem package to be held up since circa Thanksgiving here in the US. The issue has been cleared up, his impressions will be added to the OP as soon as he compiles his notes, and the package is on its way to rawrster.

To remind the participants again, the ideal time limit is one week from the date of receipt.

Thanks, and we look forward to more impressions.

So I received this today in the mail! It's too bad I no longer own the TF10 to compare as I sold it a month or so ago but anyway I have plenty to compare it to. I have the most time during the weekend so I'll compare it to the UERM custom and go from there.

It may be good or bad timing as I got everything back today from refits and middle of next week I'll be getting my UM Mentor universal :)

Great, looking forward to your thoughts.

Left is my custom UERM and right is the universal UERM. The universal is pretty big and almost looks like it was a custom first and then made into a universal until I look at my custom and it's a good amount bigger. The cable looks pretty much the same except my plug is clear while the universal is black.

From some brief listening the universal is not too bad in terms of assessing what the custom is like. The custom pretty much has a bigger sound throughout compared to the universal. The biggest things are that the sound stage, detail and I think the mids in the universal are a tad more forward but I need more listening for that.

Comparison to Mentor would be greatly appreciated when it arrives and time permits smily_headphones1.gif

Wow...the custom has an even bigger soundstage? Man I need better paying jobs...

I'll try but the plan is to ship these out by next weekend which means I won't have much time with the Mentor. However the UERM universal and modded TF10 are both products that are not available so it probably doesn't make a difference. I have a custom UERM that I can compare to any time afterwards.

Yes. My custom is fitted for my ears so it makes sense that it's a bigger sound compared to the universal. I find that there's definitely a step up.

I tried the modded TF10 and it definitely sounds different. I don't have a TF10 anymore but the mids sound different and I think there's less bass. It's closer to a signature I would go for than the stock TF10 signature. Seeing as the idea was to get it to be closer to the UERM signature it does make sense that it's more neutral than the stock TF10. Anyway more to come as I listen to them more.

So I've tried the modded TF10 a bit more. It sounds like there's something off about the mid range. I'm not really sure what but it sounds wonky for lack of a better term. I'll have to give it a bit more listening to see if I can break it down to exactly what it is.

I had the same experience. Channel imbalance?

Thanks for the update! How's your fit with the TFRM?

I wouldn't say channel imbalance but just seems off. I wonder where the crossover points are at however as it could be that.

The fit is the same as any TF10 so it sucks. I get a better seal with the universal UERM except it takes a while for it to be positioned properly.

Yeah it sounds odd for sure. Almost hollow. Has to be related to the mod. To bad the modder has gone MIA.

Interesting observations, considering that the TFRM's measured frequency response is pretty close to the UERM's.

True, but I don't recall seeing measurements on distortion and channel matching. Maybe I missed them? Those two factors could affect sound considerably.

True, but even if the channels were mismatched, I sincerely doubt it would account for the vertical sound compression that I heard vs the UERM. At most, the soundstage should be skewed left or right...or something relatively minor to that effect.
