Chi-Uni-Fi 8 Saturday, June 21, 2014 interest check thread! - Page 12

Oh, I have another question about this whole meet thing. Do we bring our own sources of music to try out someone else's equipment or do we just listen to whatever source the owner of the equipment brought? For example, I would be carrying around my laptop and an external hard drive which I would then have to plug into a DAC I was listening to.

generally you listen to their source unless you can move stuff around or unless you can plug something of yours in like a usb drive with flacs on it or something.

Oh ok, thank you. So do you think I could carry around my external hard drive then or would you advise against it (just not necessary)?

If you want to use your own files, then go ahead and bring your harddrive.  Proper etiquette would be to ask the owner of each rig if they mind, as some setups are more sensitive than others (I suppose you could say the same about owners, too :))

Ok, awesome. Yeah, I would definitely ask first. I totally understand the sensitivity thing haha (no one is allowed to move my desktop but me)

Go ahead as I heard back from the Sheraton and they got my check and will be sending me a receipt.  I think the contract will be a formality to get taken care of.

Your full-tower PC (and long list of expensive components you've built into it) looks expensive and unwieldy.  The worry isn't of some HeadFi-er causing damage - we are a respectful peoples, and utterly graceful - but the actual transit and set-up/teardown pose risks, I'd say.

So yeah, carry a thumb drive (or portable external drive if you really need your whole library with you), as others have said, and I wanted to add that you should also bring any CDs you might own, for optical media transports/players.  It also looks like we'll have vinyl capabilities, so any records you have (don't go thinking you *need* to have any, or any CDs either, to be in this hobby) could be a fun addition.

One rule is just to bring your favorites - favorite music, favorite gear - so that you can share with others but also make things easy for yourself.

Headphone listeners are always better when we're together (sorry for Jack Johnson popping into my head randomly).

AND - welcome to HeadFi, sorry about your wallet!

Oh, I wasn't worried about someone causing damage to it, I was just using it as a general statement to show that I understand that people are protective of their stuff. When I go to lan parties or move in or out of my dorm I am the only one that carries it (instead of friends or family). Also I don't really have many CDs or any vinyls. I haven't gotten that far into the hobby yet and I basically grew up with digital music. As for gear, I will probably only bring my external hard drive (500GB portable, USB 3.0) and my only pair of headphones to compare with everything else.

Also, thank you for the welcome! My wallet has gotten used to feeling empty between college and pc building. I figure, what's the worst that can happen? Happy ears and an even more empty wallet? Not sure that's possible haha.

Oh Hello.

I'm new to this, but I just wanted to drop in and say that I am in the Chicagoland area, and if I can, I would also like to attend this event.

Anyway... /waves

^^ What superjawes just said. Same here. I am a super newb with this stuff, but it is yet another bug that I have bitten by recently. I really like hacking & DIY, and audio has always interested me yet always flew over my head. Just wanting to learn more & make potential hifi-geek contacts.

As a member of the last wave--I just missed Chi-Uni-Fi 7, but made it to 7.5--welcome to you both.

I will try to bring some DIY stuff (headphone, amp, cables) to help your new bug bite.  Also, Dan of MrSpeakers plans to come and you will be able to see what happens when a DIY guy from the forum successfully/spectacularly makes the transition to commercial.

Oh boy, so many changes.

Looks like the AK120 got ditched for...an X5 lol. I think the cans I'm powering should be more than happy with that. I used the price differential and might be able to bring something...interesting to Chi-Uni-Fi (COUGH COUGH LITTLE DOT MK VI+ COUGH COUGH).
