With an E12 amp yes. The X3 will drive them by themselves but the E12 adds a lot of much needed power for inefficient phones.

Panda,
Does X3's EQ work in its line output? Sorry if I miss something. Thank you!

Hi.

Someone knows if X3 supports ReplayGain tags? I use it with FLAC and OGG.

Thanks.

Question, and sorry if it was already answered, but would the X3's headphone output connected to the E12 sound much different than going from the Line Out to the E12?

Does going from the headphone output still enable the AMP? I'm just trying to avoid running the cable from the bottom of the X3's L/O to the top of the E12. If I have to, I'll flip it over....

Answers appreciated anyway :) Thanks in advance!

That depends on the user if they can hear it or not but for the most part yes. And hell, you may even be sending the E12 too high a signal and thus clip it(clipping is easy to hear).

Headphone out uses output buffer(main amp) amplifier. Line out doesn't.

Not sure I understand the logistic issue.
LO to E12 works very nicely for me using the cable supplied with the X3. As far as using the headphone out there were some measurements done that indicate that so long as you don't turn up the X3 too high they should sound similar but definitely won't be identical.

Thanks to you both. That pretty much answers my questions.

As for logistics, If the LO was on top of the X3 I think it would look a lot better. Running a Line-Out cable from the bottom of the DAP to the top of my E12 would look tacky and cheap (IMO). I prefer all cables coming from 1 end if possible. I know, it's anal, but I like a clean look! Especially with how nice the gear already looks I don't want to cheapen it :)

That's why I was wondering how the headphone-out sounded compared to the LO port, since it IS on the top.

My cable is all on one end. But I listen on a plane so this is a natural configuration.

If all your cables are on the same end, then you're not using the LO. You're using the headphone out.

I want the screen on the X3 to be on top, and the E12 knobs to be on top.

Everything on top. Cables, knobs, everything.

The Line Out on the X3 is on the bottom.....

Am I not making sense? I thought it was pretty clear.

Yeah I figured you wanted knob on top so I edited my post.
My rig sits on an airplane tray so knob at bottom is natural.
If you search Head-Fi (I couldn't find it) there were measurements done on the X3 and per that HO measures very close to LO up to a level of 53.
Set your E12 to +16dB and set X3 to low gain and I think you'll be happy.
