The 598's are decent for rock but won't do very good for electronic since the highs are rolled off and the bass is lacking. Although the SRH940's retail for the same price of the 598's, the 940's beat them in terms of overall clarity, vocals (midrange), DETAIL!!!, and speed. However, i do give the soundstage and comfort to the 598's.

That being said, the 940's aren't perfect, every headphone has its downside. The problem with the 940's is that some people find them lacking in the bass, specifically midbass.

But then again, you won't find a headphone with no downsides, even the $1500 Sennheiser HD800 is hated by people for being overly bright/sibilant :)

I'd say neither of them are good for electronic music at least, since both are fairly bass light. Both are probably decent for rock. For a good and durable all-rounder you could consider dt770.

And it certainly can do the bass for electronic music. Goes deep and sounds pretty controlled. A nice set of cans. Get the 250 Ohm or 600 Ohm (If you don't use them portable) version. And a small headphone amp (Portable check fiio or a desktop unit). You will be set for some years probably.

Until you get the bug for more headphones. And trust me, that bug will find you.

With all that said, you will even find a vast improvement with a set of ATH-M50's and a Fiio e10. A friend of mine bought that combo and is pretty happy with it. I'd like to second the DT770's. I don't own them, but I have the big brother's to them and they sound incredible. The only real difference is the closed design from what I understand from the DT880's.

Thanks everyone. I did some research on the DT770s and they do look impressive but I can't get them here. I'll order them from overseas soon... Cheers! :D

Oh yes, there is no going back....you would do well to hold back the bug for a couple of years.

What audiophile headphones can you actually get?

I hated the shure srh940 and a900x
The shures were super treble happy and very thin sound with no bass.
Similar to the a900x.

And how much impact it makes on your listening is dependent on how much you listen. Us audiophiles listen to as many details as possible. "Oh, the mid bass is really emphasized. The trebles are recessed. It sounds bloated" you get the idea. Meanwhile there are people how are fine with iBuds and couldn't care less if there was a ton of distortion, really wonky sound signature, etc. because they simply don't listen carefully enough.

The website I use only sells Senns... HD 598, 558, 380 pro e.t.c... no sonys, grados, e.t.c... :( Which is the most 'neutral' pair of cans outta these? lets forget rock and electronic... I'll go for something balanced...

You'll probably enjoy the hd598 very much. Not the best for the money but you seem very limited in choice.

558 would be my choice. Much better price/performance ratio.

The 558 is quite cheaper... Is there much difference between it and the 598? And I don't mind the bass... I guess if I get a good amp and tinker with the EQ a bit I can easily drive good bass from the hd598's... I prefer detail>>>>>bass... I'm not a bass-head I just wanna hear every detail in my music, but I don't want something with no bass at all :P

Actually, there aren't a big difference if you do some very easy modding to the hd558 (removing some tape inside it). The drivers are identical AFAIK, but sennheiser made the sound of the hd558 worse on purpose (I think) by covering some vents around the drivers. Opening the 'phones will void the warranty, though.

I've made up my mind... HD 598 it is... Just a few things I wanna ask now... how can you tell if its a fake( I don't trust this site THAT much), and how durable are these/how long will they last? I'm a VERY rough user... who knows, next thing you know I'm out doing Parkour with my 598's...

You know they aren't isolating at all, right? Also, they aren't exactly made for portable use.
