DSP advances really stand out, e.g. Smyth Realiser. 

 

For physical stuff. I'm pretty sure balanced armatures in IEMs is a pretty recent thing.

The argument is quite vague: a lot of improvements came recently, only we don't see them affecting customers directly. New materials, specially plastics were developed, laser cutting systems are more efficient, production costs are lower. Nowadays design a good pair of headphones can be achieved with new acoustic technologies, and computer software...
