AKG new headphone K545? - Page 43

I never masqueraded myself. That is my Amazon profile. Since AKG asked me to review the headphone I thought I would post it on Amazon as well here. But I didn't see any point in rewriting my review just for Amazon. I figured Amazon readers might not visit head-fi.

BTW I never bought these from Razordog and clearly stated that in my review. But I did thank Razordog for forwarding my name to AKG and thanked AKG for being allowed to review the headphone and being allowed to keep them afterwards.

I realized something today ! The Schiit Magni is not sufficient to drive correctly the k550 ... I brought it from the office to try it on my amp Nad and the Lyr, what a difference! The k550 is A LOT more dynamic and bassy. But for example, with the Momentum (received today) the difference is not significant.
Question ==> is the K545 as difficult to drive as the k550? The specs looks similar (32 ohm, around 100 db of sensibility) (I did not want to bring the Lyr to office, not very discrete ... or do I try the vali?)

I use my K545 straight from my LG G2 quite often. My home setup right now is the Audioengine D1 and it drives the K545 extremely well so a smaller amp should be fine. My old setup was a Little dot DAC 1 and a RWaudio Amp1 which is in my signature and it also had enough power for the K545 and it also worked well for the K550 when I had it.

Are you sure its the amount of juice that is making the K550 sound better or just better synergy? I ask because the Audioengine D1 is not very powerful butsound so awesome because it's a warmer source/amp which works very well with the AKG as it helps tone down their brightness.

I see Headphone Bar in Canada now has the K545 and K845 for sale. So there are now two good online retailers, Razordog being the other.

Yes I must be mistaken in speaking of driving ability. This is probably as you say, thank you for the note. I think the k545 will be better with Magni. Well, now I do not know if I should look for a headphone to go with my amp or vice versa ... :)

you are talking about scalability.

If a headphone that is efficient and sounds good with amp  A or source B then improves with more power from amp C then it is showing scalability.

The momentum sucks in that aspect because it doesn't improve much when you drive it harder.... but that can be good because it sounds great right away where as some other ones don't sound good until driven by amp C. ie the k550 that could be why I didn't like it cause  it wasn't amped well.

Thanx! I think you very accurately describes things. I noticed myself that change amp does not add much to Momentum. As you point out this is a double-edged (hem, is that  correct English? To say that there are advantages and disadvantages to an easy driving headphone).

If I get some time tomorrow, I will do a comparison between the K545 and the K267 Tiesto.

@ dweaver can you recall which headphone sounded more transparent between the k545 or the NAD?

Thoughts about the AKG K550 vs the newer K454?

One of the reasons i've been going away from wanting the 550's is that 3m long cable, it really puts a downer on the portability aspect of the headphones. Luckily the 454 does have a removable cable, but this seems like one of the only things going for it compared to the 550. For someone who has tested both of these, how do they compare in sound?

On another note, i would be curious for someone to do an earpad mod to beef up the pads or replace them with 550's if they would fit. We could get a slightly better soundstage out of them. I know the 550's were great in this aspect due to their large, deep earpads.

Right now im deciding between the 550's for $165 or the 454 for $200, which would you choose?

hey buddy!

If you go up to the search part of the thread and type in k550 you can see it. also you mean k545 right!

expect a smaller soundstage, stronger mids, stronger bass and a tons more musical. I would go for the k545.

Dweaver did a comparison earlier on in the thread

Thanks man,

I've been looking through the thread trying to find all the reviews/comparison but with 43 pages its hard to read every post. I admit i started to read about 1 in every 5 pages lol. I'll go back and look for his comparison. And yeah i did mean K545, dyslexia messes me up sometimes :(

I suspect if you were to put large earpads on you would get a closer soundstage to the k550's, this is probably something i would fool around with when i get the headphones provided the earpads are user replaceable.

Edit: Went back and found the comparison for other people asking this same question.

the cup itself is way smaller noone has tried it to our knowledge but you can be the first. Im pretty sure it won't fit though but who is to stop you.

look at the difference in size. try some alpha pads on it instead which are angled.
