Does anyone know how the MDR-1R, DT770 (80 ohm), and a900x stack up against each other?
I've heard all of them. It's really hard to choose, as its more about preference. I couldn't get a good seal with the dt770 unless I repositioned them. I'd say for comfort: get dt770, for sound: get the a900x.

I prefer the A900X's over all sound quality, over the DT770 Pro 80-Ohm.

So, going over the headphones I've been considering, does this seem like a good assessment?

Comfort: A900x>MDR-1R>DT770>K172mkII>WS99

General Audio: A900X>WS99>MDR-1R>K172mkII>DT770

If so, then it looks like the A900X is the pair to get!

Your right about comfort, except I find the dt770 to be the most comfortable, then a900x, then ws99, then 1r.

The sound part isn't right to me, it should be:
WS99>A900x>DT770=1R. Ws99 definitely takes the cake for me. But let me add the kef m500 to the list. KEF m500 IMO is better than all at everything (exept soundstage). Pretty comfortable too.

You might also want to take a  look into the UE 6000s, I tried them and was wowed by the sound with a good price point and unbeatable comfort , I also like the akg 271 mk ii , very neutral phones but slightly clampy on the head,

Alright, I'm pretty torn between the WS99's and the A900X. It looks like the WS99's have slightly better all-around sound, but are quite uncomfortable, and I don't want the bass to overshadow everything else.

I'm probably going to order both and return one later.

Bass won't overshadow anything else, but if your worrying about comfort, and soundstage, get the a900x.

If your debating on the MDR-1R id just go with the Sennheiser Momentums?

That's the best strategy. If you order from Amazon directly or Fulfilled by Amazon (not Amazon 3rd party vendors that do their own shipping), RMA is easy as long as you keep the original packaging intact and the headphones in perfect shape. Crutchfield and B&H Photo are two other online vendors that carry a lot of headphones that have painless RMA. Return shipping on a pair is usually around $10 or so. Worthwhile demo fee.
