[Review] Superlux HD681 EVO
Jan 2, 2015 at 3:52 AM Post #526 of 911
Hi all!
I've tried to find an answer but still haven't. I am new to this topic and need help with deciding between HD668B and HD681EVO. I don't know which would be the best for me since I listen to very different types of music e.g. classical, chillout, electro, house or rock, also I play FPS game where steps are key. So most probably I'd like detailed sound which would be able to describe all frequnces closest to where they should be with wide surround effect. If that makes any sence... sorry if it sounds silly.
1) If I understand well all reviews I have read so far about EVOs, they are more neutral, but some say HD668B's lows are more fun to listen - is it something which could be boosted only by EQ settings - if wanted?
2) If I am not mistaken open cans are better for sound if you don't need isolation, but how HD669s sound in comparison with other two (is it woth to wait newer icomming version of them)?
3) I listen to music from my phone or laptop with builtin Harman/Kardon speakers (if that has an impact) so... Wouldn't it be an issue with higher impedance of HD668B?
4) How big difference will do addition of an portable amplifier... is it worh to buy it for 50$ headphones with my current HW ?

I have the 668's and the EVO and think they could potentially both work for you. I believe you have it reversed though as the EVO's bass is more "fun" and 668 is more even across the frequency spectrum. The EVO has a lot more bass but the 668 does have nice lows and wouldn't say it lacks low end as say a headphone like the ATH-AD900 does.
The EVO needs a mod (perhaps more than one) to sound its best and I did the foam\felt mod where you remove, and my case, replace the thick black felt positioned in front of the driver. I used a 100% cotton thin makeup pad my wife uses to remove makeup and it made a nice positive impact allowing more highs through and helping with that thick wool sound I thought they had stock.
If you want a more neutral even sound go with the 668, if you want a more fun headphone with strong low end get the EVO just make sure to read the forum posts about the different mods you can do to improve sound. I like them both and have no desire to sell either.

Thank you for your reply CADCAM. I am just affraid I'd ruin them by moding since I've never done it. And won't I lose varanty if I mod them? Some say 668Bs have piercing trebles and that EVOs have them juicy, what do you think, because I am sensitive to hights. And will I need an amplifier if I go for HD668B due to their higher impedance?

If you can buy both, buy them. But if you could only choose one pair. I would go with the EVOs.

EVO vs 668B

1. EVOs are nice looking when used outside vs 668Bs.
2. EVOs have 2 sets of ear pads.
3. EVOs are boomy but can be controlled through EQ in PC or other devices.
4. EVOs headband are not durable and i think the 668Bs are more durable overall.
5. 668Bs have piercing trebles but can be EQ. Still has less boomy bass than EVOs.
6. 668Bs have more clarity in mid range frequency than EVOs.
7. 668Bs can be slightly compared to Q701 in sound quality.
8. 668Bs has more detail than EVOs due to clear mids and less boomy bass.

Both sounds alright with out an amp.

Thank you very much for making it clearer to me. I'm not going to go outside with them, mainly because they are not closed so I don't want to annoy people around. Well I guess I want to avoid boomy bass, depends what is boomy to you I've never had any of big HPs.. I've tried only Koss Porta Pro years ago and they are crazy boomy to me. What is better to controll trought EQ - bass or treble ? By your comparisons I would rather go for 668B then due to their cleaner and more defined bass layers so I would only reduced a little bit of hights.

Someone just recomended me also HD330... what do you think about them? I am affraid I would need an amp for them anyway.

Control the 8K treble probably around -3 or -4 and it should be okay, well at least for me. I've tried wearing the HD330 and tested for 1 song only. It should be okay as well but i don't like the looks and the coiled wire. lol

OK.. thanks for tip. I just found out 330s would not fit on my head anyway... nevertheless I've found another HPs around the same price - Takstar Pro 80 and TAKSTAR HI2050 - Do you know something about them how would they compete with mentioned Superluxes? And in general is it true that open cups have ligher and more enjoyable sound in comparison to closed ones?

I haven't heard and tried the Takstar HPs...

I know for a fact that open / semi-open HPs produces greater soundstage and more pleasing vs closed. There are closed HP that are enjoyable I'm sure DJ's and other closed HP enthusiast can recommend you one.

That's what I need to know, I want greater soundstage. Thank you for your time.

I had the Takstar HI2050 and if you are sensitive to high frequencies don't bother IMHO. They are a nice sounding headphone but the highs are a little ragged and they were a little small for me.

I find the harsh highs with the 668 is more program dependent and if you have a good quality recording and good associated equipment the highs are not harsh (after a lengthy burn-in 100+ hours).

I only listen with an amp so can't comment on how either sound without one. I use an O2 or Purity Audio KICAS with the EVO (no Caliente mode with the EVO)

The foam\felt mod only requires removing the pads and removing the thick black felt that is glued to the plastic screen in front of the driver. It comes off easily and I was able to just place the cotton pad in its place and it stood in place without any other adhesive.

EVO leaks less sound.

I don't know how much sensitive I am to hights tho, because I never had good hedphones. Anyway I have kind of big head and ears so I guess Takstars wouldn't fit me well. Have they smaller holes in ear pads or the whole construction is made for smaller(chinese) heads? Are Superluxes bigger?

Whereas HI2050s are not for me, what about Pro 80s? I know they are closed but seems like they are not that bright.

I was browsing posts made in this thread and one guy, who owns all them Superluxes says that surprisingly HD681-B sounds the best - it has the slightly bigger soundstage than the rest of them (good for FPS), bass is more juicy and defined than in boomy EVOs, which even need 100+ hours of burning and modding to play better. HD681-B is in comparison to HD668B much more fun he said, 668Bs are more like analytical and soud limited. So he thinks HD681-Bs are best choice for fps gaming and music listening at once... But people just overlooks them because popular HD681 and HD681 EVO.

So now in my sight are HD681-BHD681EVO and Takstar Pro 80
- HD681-Bs are great as they are
- EVOs will need mod to clear the bass and Pro 80 (but seems like have smaller soundstage than 681Bs anyway)
- Pro 80s is big question - they have quality materials and construction, nice design, but are closed and maybe small for my head/ears ... it would be nice to kknow how they sound compared to both superluxes but I guess due to closed cans they will have much smaller soundstage anyway)

Takstar Pro's are the same size as HI2050, which was too small for me, I have a large head and they were just a smidge too small.
No experience with the HD681-B but EVO fits fine.

If that ? was at me I have no idea only owned the HI2050.

I also own the 668b and the 681evo. I would recommend the 681evo. The 668b has a little more upper mids than the 681evo, but I don't think anything is missing in the 681evo mids, no loss of detail and it sounds a bit more natural to boot. The bass is more powerfull in the 681evo, but that also has something to do with extension, the 681evo goes noticeably deeper into the low frequencies than the 668b. The highs are somewhat lower in the 681evo, but that is a good thing because there is too much treble in the 668b. The 681evo has more neutral and more natural highs along with the fine balance in the mids.
Build quality is better with the 681evo, much better pads and a better headband.
There is no doubt in my mind, you should clearly go for the 681evo. (Not that the 668b is a bad headphone, the evo is just better in every way, that's all)
