Well, That Was Strange... (Power Cable)

Hey everyone,

I have a great Audio-GD power conditioner between my Mac Pro 3,1 and the wall. I went to turn on the big machine a few minutes ago, and I heard a rather loud buzz: it sounded somewhat like noises heard form cheeeep SMPS units. I followed the noise physically, eventually ended on the IEC plug at the wall. I shut everything down, switched to another cable, and we're all good.

Weird, right?

What just happened here?

Can't say for sure, but some time back Audio-gd was shipping products to the US with power cords that were incorrectly wired (hot and neutral were reversed). That using a different plug helped your situation indicates that this might be the case. Do you have a multimeter or something you can use to check the wiring of the Audio-gd power cord?

Great point. I'll hook up my multi late Friday.

Just to be pedantic- the conditioner is GD, the cable is not.

Best

Ah, ok. But  yeah, still would be worthwhile to check out the cord that's giving you problems.

Well, this is embarrassing...

My cables seem to be (read: are) some of those fake Oyaides sold by hiamp_9 and various other Chinese fraudulent cable sellers on Ebay a few years back.

I haven't opened it up, but I'm guessing that things are rough in there....

Doesn't sound good. Let us know what you find.

That is why power cables should follow certain standards. In case of a fire, if they find out the cord was not certified = no money.
