Planning on modding my K172's

Hey guys,

I've been looking into detachable cable mods around here and it seems like an awesome thing to do to my K172's, which have a 3m non-detachable cable, which can be a huge bitch sometimes. So I was wondering if anyone has experience with opening up the K172's or any AKG really. I understand the mechanical process of the mod, installing the new jack and such; it's just taking apart and putting the headphones back together that I'm a little hesitant on.

Any tips?

Taking apart the k1xx and k2xx series headphones is a very similar process. I have refurbished seven k240s and one k141. If you look up a disassembly guide for a k240 it should grant you some insight.

I would at least take apart the left side end-cap and see what you have to deal with. There won't be much space to fit a jack but you can certainty try. Taking apart the left cap is the only real disassembly you'll have to do.

Another solution is to simply shorten the stock cable and use a 1/8" plug. Be sure to take note of the wiring and keep things consistent.
