First time I see a thread like this here

I dont quite understand why it should be so odd that an amp that was once considered good later on is considered bad - that is only natural when better candidates become available in the same price range. It's relative.

Yep, they're available on the market. Buy one from a place that allows returns (or hit a local audio store that carries them, there must be quite a few hi-end shops in Philly) and give it a good audition. If you like it, buy it... if you don't, skip it. Fini...
