So obviusly you think it will be a smart $35 purchase for anyone looking to start up a budget phone build? And also doe sany1 have word on why the 580's went from $114 to $190 in March?

They're on to us, that's why! The M50 used to go for as low as $110 on Amazon. Now you can't find it for much less than $160. Get enough people buying something and the deep discounts go away.

Or there could be some other factor that's causing the increase, since a lot of headphones seemed to go up in price recently. Small, on-ear portables like the PX100 II and PX200 II were selling well below their MSRP a few months ago. Recently I looked because I was searching out cheap headphones to recommend to a friend, and now they're all back up to near (ridiculous) MSRP. I also remember idly toying with the idea of picking up one of these for myself at the beginning of the year, but I need something like that like I need a hole in the head, so I didn't bother.

Oh, and yes, it's definitely worth checking out. Granted, so are all the headphones mentioned in this thread thus far.

Actually... I'll let y'all in on a little secret.  There's a headphone out there called a Pioneer SE-A1000 that is pretty darned good.  I would characterize it as the love child of a an HD 650 and an SR-80 (that tramp).  Almost no one here knows about it, and as a result it has had to fend for itself out in the open consumer market.  And because the rank and file Amazon customer doesn't know good sound at all, the price has now dropped below $60 (from its MSRP of $149).  Poor thing...

The Panasonic RP-HTF600s were a pretty nice purchase, but I'm pretty sure better can be done; people said that it beat the M50s, but I just wasn't hearing it.

Also, we have similar names, although mine is due to Melee's 4-character limit.

That's an interesting combination--a smooth, refined, slightly bloomy sound crossed with an energetic, raw, and leaner signature. It seems like you could take the best aspects of both and make a great headphone, or else take the worst aspects and make a real clunker. I'm assuming it's the former.

I imagine it's not too uncommon that some models just don't quite shine when they should. I remember reading a story on IF about the Beyer DJX-1, where Tyll said it was a pretty decent headphone and lamented that it had never had a vogue on Head-Fi or elsewhere. It's discontinued, unfortunately, so it missed the boat permanently.

I would like to support your quest to defeat Zardak

Why limit it to just a headphone under $100. What about a full 90% audiophile setup?

Recommending:
Koss ProDJ100 for $39 currently on Amazon (or if you can get them Superlux HD681)
USB Muse Audio mini DAC for $27
Pizza

BOOM! I solved all your problems! Don't make me repeat myself.

EDIT:
Forgot the right intro:

There is a universal consent that...
or
Everybody agrees that...<the above>
or
As everyone with <add something like: 2 braincells, an ear, etc.> knows...
or
The undisputed budget King is the <brandname, model>....
or
Nobody would argue that....

Getting a Fiio E11 with the JVC S500 as a gift for my sister. Blows a lot of combos away for 110 bucks.

And dammit Zardak, you might be in Melbourne but I'm still gonna get a chartered plane to get from Essendon to Richmond

yeah its a good idea to add DAc/amps .. etc... food.. lol..... but Zardak stated that this phone was powered with a higher powered DAC/ AMP combo. But still a great idea for this thread to represent good sub $100 full phone setups. We need this here on headfi. To many top threads are dug up from the grave and the other half are derailed threads. Lets keep this alive and share not jsut headphones. But good DACS/AMPS. Also Zardak this is a callout, you should get active on here man :)

Personally, I just think he's sticking around because he's trying to sell his M50s, and while he's waiting he's having a little fun with us all. That's okay, because, at least insofar as the exchanges some of us have had with him, he's harmless and we've had some fun with him, too.

Wish he wouldn't keep giving conflicting advice, though. Maybe this thread will serve as a counterbalance there.

yeah the fact that almost every phone he has reviewed has had a contradicted opninion somewhere down the road from him, makes me believe he is trolling. But so far, by the looks of it, there are lots of nice budget builds and phones listed in this thread. Ordering the Pioneer phones today  cant wait to see how they sound :) Also any opinions on how the 580's should be EQ'ed?

M top notch <$100 that I used all of last semester of school: FiiO E7 I got on Amazon for $70 and my AKG K340 IEM I got for $30.

Jun 24, 2013 at 8:17 PM Post #29 of 117
I have yet to find a  I would use IEM, if they actually would fit in my ears. Its the strangest thing but I have yet to find a pair of IEM that fit my eras right.

Also to add. I started a new subreddit for people to share their headphone pics. But my question is how do I get this advertised throughout headfi?  http://www.reddit.com/r/ShareYourHeadphones
