Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO vs AKG K-701

Hello,

I have been struggling with a decision which is where to get a Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO or a AKG K-701, the primary use of which will be gaming 70% (all genre of games), music 20% (mainly dubstep, alternative modern rock and some pop) and films 10%. I will be purchasing these headphones with the Asus Xonar DGX and a headphone amp which I am not sure about yet. My priorities for these headphones will be an immersive gaming experience so good bass is a must, however I also want to play competitively which will require good positional audio, but I still want an immersive experience>positional audio however only by a bit, keep in mind that price is not a problem with these 2 headphones, however if you suggest anything new make sure it's in the range if ~£150

I have a couple of questions:

1) Is the bass really that bad on the AKG 701's?
2) Is the DT990's mids really that bad as I have heard?
3) What amp should I get £80 max (I know wrong forum but need more opinions anyway :P)
4) Is bass that important for immersion in the game (such as Skyrim, BF3 etc.)?
5)  What headphones do you think will be the most immersive in games and the music I listen to?
6)  What do you think would be the best out of the two for my uses?

I think a better choice would be the DT880 because it's a better all rounder.

Neither the DT990 or k701 are suitable for dubstep and alternative rock.

I am able to purchase the K701's for £160 and the DT990 for around £100.

Just buy the pro version (aka dt880 pro, not the premium ones). It costs just as much as the DT990 pro.

The cheapest I can find is £200, remember I live in the UK.

Well, sorry, my mistake.

Maybe the beyerdynamic custom one pro could fit your needs, but they are closed back.

Bad bass, not for me.

I can confirm that DT990 mid is not that bad, at least not as bad as HE-400 mid.

Thanks for the input!

I would think the DT990's problem is the treble, not the mids...

I also fail to see what bass has to do with immersion, in games or otherwise.

For gaming you actually want less bass, so as to not get deafened by gunfire and explosions (unless that's what you mean by immersion...)

Have you seen MLE's thread?

As for my opinion, I've never heard either and I'm not a gamer but I've heard the Q701 and I do not recommend anyone buying it without hearing it first. The bass is nicely extended but is some 5 dB below what I would call neutral. For some people the extension makes up for the lack of quantity, but others will find it unbearable.

The DT990 are full bass and full treble headphones, which can slightly overshadow the mids, but the mids are still clear.

The DT990 will give you a "movie theater" like sound.

I have DT990pro and they are very good for gaming with, good for movies too. Don't listen to the naysayers who don't even own them. I have had Senn HD595 and 598 and DT990pro are still better than those for gaming due to wider soundstage and wider frequency response, not saying 595 and 598 are not good for gaming too though. DT990pro is better choice than K701 for your needs. Just comfort alone it beats K701 hands down.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but by immersion I mean a movie theater kind of experience, thanks for the input.

Is there any problems with build quality of the DT990 Pro?

More suggestions are welcome :)
