Need a amp for 250 ohm DT990 pro!

Hello,

I need an amp for my 250 ohm DT990 pro headphones which I have just purchased, I have a Asus Xonar DGX sound card.

This amp will be primarily used for gaming and music (gaming I want an immersive experience while music I listen to dubstep, alternative rock and pop), I want a amp which is sufficient and not overkill for a frequent gamer, my budget is around £80 but I may be able to fluctuate on this.

Keeping in mind that I do not need the amp to be mobile (it will be on my PC desk) and I live in the UK what amp would be the best for me?

Thanks.

Hey, I'm on the same boat as you. Same headphone and a gamer. And same budget, haha. I'm also using a sound card, but mine is the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Zx which I bought last Monday. In my case however, I plan on using the Sound Card as the DAC. The sound card I have is not entirely enough to power the DT 990 Pro, I can tell despite being a noob that these headphones are barely there.

But speaking of mobility, you probably won't enjoy lugging this headphones in public. Considering the fact that it's fully open type of headphones. Your sound will leak, and sound will enter on your headphones. But if you're adamant, you can simply just pick any mobile headphone of your choice. A lot of people seems to go with the FiiO E17 or the E7K, but to me? I think I'd rather go with one of the CMOY (Bass Boost edition if you prefer considering your genre preference). It's a lot cheaper and should do the job.

Then for the desk, find out how the Xonar performs for a DAC. I've only researched mine, so I don't know. If it's good to go (I have a feeling the Xonar should be able to do the job), then just get a better desktop amp.

You can start your research with: http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/desktop-amps

So far, here are my choices, though:

1. Bravo Tube V3 - Cheap. Comes with 3 equalizer on the amp itself.

2. Aune T1 - Comes with a USB DAC. I'm not sure how this will do on mine, though. I'm probably going to ignore the onboard DAC and just go with the amp. I just have it here since it meets my budget.

3. Musical Fidelity V-Can II - meets budget. Need to look more info, though.

4. Project Starlight by Garage1217.

5. Schiit Magni - $100

6. NuForce ICON - $100

Oh, and I also need help on what to get ._.

Noobs unite!

Haha, thanks for the help guys. The Magni and O2 are out of my price range though, I've heard good things about the Fiio EO9K, is it any good?

More suggestions are welcome.

the E09K is a good amp, I actually almost got one BUT I wanted something a little more neutral so I got the o2.

plus you can always add an e17 or e07 later if you need a DAC and mobile setup

I run my DT880's from a E17/E09K combo, a great little unit for the price.

That's all I can comment on personally...

Since you live in the UK, have you looked into the Neco Soundlab portable amps? They're available on UK ebay and are handmade by a seller named Neco. He has desktop amps too but the portable should fit your budget. They're quite good for the price and drive 300 ohm headphones easily. The V3 portable sound can rival those from low budget desktop amps (IMO) and its portability is a plus. I had both the E9 and the O2 and did not like either of them (both were gone in less than a week) and I still keep my Neco portable V2 amp for daily use.

I can't find any V2's on sale atm, V3's are a little over my budget unfortunately.
