FiiO E6 with an Cowon J3 - Soft Sound

Hi guys, first time poster here and a relative noob at audio.

So I have decided to come into the world of audiophiles and have bought myself a new portable audio rig. I've got the Cowon J3, Sennheiser IE80, Comply Isolation Foam Tips and the FiiO E6 Amp. The rig sounds amazing without the amp but when I do put it on, everything becomes quieter. I have to turn up the volume from 18 to about 35/40 to get the same sound. Isn't the point of a portable amp to make the sound louder? What the problem? I've seen many positive reviews and none of them have talked about this issue. Have I just gotten a bad product? Thanks.

Yes, this. You need to put the J3 to 100% volume so the HO can act like a LO. It really works well with my Arrow 4G

Ok so I've put the J3 on 40/40 but the sound still sounds softer than without the amp. Do I have to reset the cowon? Also at max volume, I can hear a considerable about of static. Do you have a step by step tutorial on adding an amp? I'm new at this

there arent any of those because using an amp is simple. put your dap on the highest volume, use a cable to connect it to the amp, adjust amp volume to your preference. im unfamiliar with cowon products, so i cant tell for sure, but it seems to me either they give of a really REALLY weak signal, or your fiios defected. but thats just largely a guess. try the fiio thread - lots of knowledgeable people there

I've always found that my J3 can drive most earphones without needing an amp.  The IE80 has a low impedance, so you should get good volume with the J3 by itself, I would think.

dont want to be rude, but did u adjust the volume on the amp?

Yes I have turned up the volume on the amp, but I can still hear static regardless of volume on the amp if the cowon is on 40/40. And to KmHaynes, yes the Cowon J3 has ample sound to drive the IE80's but I just wanted tighter bass. I got the FiiO for $20 AUD and so I couldn't really go wrong with it. If it would create a slightly better signal, I'll take it. It couldn't go worse could it?

Sounds like either the amp is defective or a fake. Did you get it from an authorized reseller?

Got it from AccessoryJack.com. Asked them and they said it was genuine but of course they could lie. Came with same packaging I saw on genuine packages. I bought a FiiO E07K as well. They also sell other audio stuff including headphones.

I think they are authorized. However in the event that I'm wrong FiiO posted a thread on how to tell a real e6 from a fake. But if I'm correct then it's simply a defective model.
