New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil - Page 57

Still Q1 for Yggy, since the metal problems will be worked out on Ragnarok and we don't have humming transformers.

Great, keep up the good work! ;)

Thanks Jason! Looking forward to January now-hope you guys get it all nailed down soon.

edit: Jason has previously posted on his opinion on a second chassis: NO. Basically, it goes against Schiit's bang-for-the-buck approach by driving up costs dramatically for needing a second chassis.

Would anyone else like to see a remote control for the Ragnarok, even if only for volume?

Surely I can't be alone in planning to place the beast between the speakers rather than right by my HP chair.

I think Jason talked about this before, and it also ties into why they don't make all in one units with both DAC and Amp together. It has to do with having a processor in the amplifier. Electronics with processors have to go through extra steps to be certified which adds cost and delays. They certify their DACs because they, by nature, include processors, but their amps can go without that extra certification because they are 'dumb' units. Even a simple volume control requires a processor to handle the radio or IR signal and translate it into volume up or down. This one little processor means the whole amp has to go through certification.

No reason Schiit couldn't do it. If they choose to do it, is another thing.

It would definitely make me a more likely customer indeed. I appreciate functionality, and the Ragnarok could be a definitive multi purpose amp for many of us, and thus be a pretty unique amp with a wide range of customers.

Just use a preamp with remote function...

That's how it should be anyway. Remote function has no business in what essentially is a power amplifier. (IMO)

Why should we have to? I think Jason and Schiit seemsb pretty responsive to customer feedback, and I think they should reconsider if they have choosen to skip a remote. They might add it as an upgrade option, e.g.

I think it has already been said. Adding remote function adds more cost and other production issues. This has nothing to do with Schiit's reputation for listening to their potential customers and supporters.

I can guarantee there will not be a remote function in the Ragnarok. I doubt there will be one with the Yggdrasil, but chances are better since it has to be certified anyway.

Well, if the Ragnarok is made to be primary a speaker amp, then surely it would be more practical to include a remote function with the Ragnarok? It would be quite an inconvenience if users have to walk up and down to adjust the volume for various songs when using the Ragnarok with speakers. Adding a pre-amp in the chain may help but this is not a good solution to include more components in the chain (likely to degrade the SQ).

Using a preamp is general practice by the masses that use speakers. Surf any speaker oriented forum and you will find, "more components in a chain degrades SQ" is a myth. Most serious listeners use separate components all through their chain (Phono, Pre-amp, DAC, USB Converter, SA/CD Player/Transport, Music Server, Power Amp, Power Conditioner). Some goes as far to use separate buffer stages. If the Rag is used as primarily a speaker amp, I would want the remote function in my preamp.

I agree with Greed. Remote function should be located on the preamp. It has no business inside a power amp that is meant for desktop speakers and headphones, which is within arms reach. Until Schiit creates a full-blown speaker power amp, I wouldn't expect to see a dedicated preamp in the first place...

I have a feeling Schiit's just waiting to announce their skunkworks remote volume knob control project.

It'll probably be named after another one of those Norse cyborgs they're so fond of.

Hear that, Jason? Schiit needs to build a preamp now too. And I wouldn't be upset if it had a phono stage in it too. wink.gif
