So.... if you put 20 in parallel you could power everything from IEM's, to HD800, to HE-6 and... Wilson Alexandria speakers... why not. :D

More interesting to me? What headphones he's using to voice the ragnarok.

I'm guessing a couple. Surely HD800 & LCD-3 must be on the list.

Or maybe he's one of those guys who designs a "superior circuit" and whichever way it sounds that's "the way it's supposed to sound". :D

yeah, i suspect at least the hd800. i only ask b/c the other amp i'm looking at, the auralic taurus, was definitely voiced on the lcd-2. though people on the auralic thread say that it works really well with the hd800, i might prefer something that had the hd800 in mind when fine-tuning the sound...

It's not easy being an amp maker when two of the most prevailing high-end headphones on the market sound so different! I don't like calling the HD800 "bright" because it's a more complex topic than that, but in comparision the LCD-2/3/X are undoubtedly dark.

So one high-end headphone is sensitive to too much treble energy, the other sucks it up and could do with a bit more...

Easy, you stick to the HD600 like me, mod the HD800, get a HE500 and mod that or ... bitch about it on head-fi until they get the message. That's the best. :)

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Schiit used the HD800 for Ragnarok development. As with the Mjolnir, I'm sure the LCD-2/3 were included. Although the Raganarok is billed as a universal amp, its success as a product will hinge on it sounding good with both the HD800 and LCD-3. I'm confident it will sound more neutral than the Mjolnir. Too warm, and the LCD-3 gets syrupy--too bright and the HD800 treble starts to glare.  Gotta be neutral and very transparent for the win.

Since it's supposed to be universal, I'm more interested in which IEMs and which speakers was used in testing. For headphones I think I read that there were a lot of headphones used for testing, including AKGs and Denons and Beyers as well as those mentioned here, back when the Lyr was introduced.

It would be interesting to hear from Jason which headphones he used as reference(s) during the development of Ragnarok/Yggdrasil.

Anyway, I'm happy if an amplifier has many features, but I'll settle by asking only for THE feature: sound, and it has to be good .

I'm pretty sure I can almost answer that question just from checking out the Schiit booth at the Socal Head-fi meet. They had the HD800, LCD-XC, LCD-3(I think.. or the 2 couldn't tell), and the Alpha Dogs all around the Ragnarok which was paired with the Gungnir DAC. I listened to both the HD800 and Alpha Dogs with the Rag and they both gave me the "I'm not listening to headphones" impression as far as imagining that there is nothing separating me from the music surrounding my body.

The Alpha Dogs impressed me a lot when paired with the Rag. The texture on the mids is incredible I was hearing things I had never heard before in the song by Flock of Seagulls "I Ran(So Far Away)" in the first 40 seconds of the song.

I played this song because:

1. I am familiar with how the song sounds 2. It was on the playlist that Jason had set up for the listening booth plus it was in FLAC

Oh yeah and the Alpha Dogs and HD800 are both winners on the demo Rag  I heard : ]

thanks for that bit of info. to be honest, i wasn't a big fan of the ADs, but i'm sure it was partly because i was source/amp limited at the time i owned them. maybe i'll pick it up again in the future, after i get my ragnarok ;)

hehe you quoted me before I fixed my post. Dan I mean Jason. Both remind me of Davids who slayed Goliath with their cheap products that sound too good

Well, since that's taken care of, now to see what it does for the HE-6 :D
