New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil - Page 79

Oh, and, er, of the 5 PC boards inside a Ragnarok, actually one of them is surface mount--the microprocessor control board.

Do I want to wait for Ragnorok if I'm otherwise getting  Mjolnir?  I have a order for both Gungnir and Mjolnir on backorder right now.  I assume there's no reason to go for Ragnarok for headphones only, but please tell me if I should wait.  I can't see Ragnorok being better for headphones than Mjolnir.

I know, I should be able to sell gear, but it always ends up going to secondary locations instead.

If you're only going to use fully balanced headphones then I'd stick with Mjolnir. If there's any chance you'd want to drive some speakers or SE headphones then you may want Ragnarok instead.

^This.

Ragnarok seems like a whole-system solution for me, with my Soloist as a pre-amp.

What primary headphone will you be using? If it's an LCD-2 or LCD-3, the Mjolnir is one of the best choices. If you have any bright headphones like the HD800, I'd cancel the Mjolnir. My expectation is that the Rag will need to be more neutral than the Mjolnir to match well with a range of headphone voicing.

The Mjolnir is too forward with the LCD-X for my taste, so I'm hoping the Rag's voicing will be more complementary. Honestly though, no one has any idea at this point. If the voicing is similar to something like the GSX-mk2, as opposed to the Mjolnir--I think the Rag will be much more successful.

I was expecting a thru-hole all discreet microprocessor...... (kidding)

Everything about Schiit is discreet.  They even ship their gear in boxes that show the shipper as "Web Services" so your wife doesn't see the company name and realize what you're buying...

"Web Services..."

That sounds like you're buying *something else entirely* instead.

Not sure which I'd rather be caught with.

edited for family friendliness...

Where is this notion coming from? From the start the Ragnarok has been a top flight headphone amp, and oh yeah we'll throw in speaker posts too. This has been done by other companies too, such as Woo Audio and Eddie Current among others yet you don't see people writing off a WA5 or 2A3mk2 or mk4 as a system solution.

I don't understand your question.  My understanding is that this is intended to power everything from IEM's to speakers. Am I missing something?

Maxlva is saying that even if one only plans to drive fully balanced hps the Ragnarok might be preferred on the grounds it's intended to be schiit's end-game amp. As in, better than Mjolnir.

If it succeeds, it's more than just a system solution, though it may well be this as well.

Jason, would I be crazy if I wanted to bridge the 2 channels of the Ragnarok in unity gain mode for even moar powah? Or is that a schitty idea? You guys test it in any crazy configurations like that at all? Does the microprocessor keep the Rag safe from dumbasses who want to experiment?

Also one more question that you may or may not want to answer (secret Schiit design info perhaps)...in unity gain mode does the Rag bypass the gain stage, or just use more NFB (kinda like the Asgard)?

My own counterpoint to this is, the mojo amp will pass along the rest of your audio chain to the 800's  And yes the 800's can be 'bright', but they can be toned down.

In my pairing of the 800's and the mojo, the inner details and resolution and especially the bass extension are marvelous.

You make it sound like the Ragnarok is just a Mjolnir with speaker taps as if this isn't supposed to be a quality jump, but rather an add-on.
