Portable Amp for Iphone + HD 598

Hi Head-fi,

I recently bought Sennheiser HD 598. I love to listen music with my Iphone, on bad, or on sofa etc :)...

I love to listen lossless (flac, wav, dts) and 320 kbps lossy music.

On my Desktop I have connected Genius 5.1 Wood Surround System SW-HF5.1 6000 http://www.geniusnet.com/wSite/ct?xItem=16678&ctNode=146

On my Desktop I have installed Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Value http://asia.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=873&product=14189

Hense, I don't want and don't need to use my Sennheiser on PC. I need only portable amp without DAC function for my HD 598.

I browsed for many reviews of FIIO portable amplifiers.

My favorite is FIIO E12, then E11.

I know that HD 598 doesn't need amp with a huge power.

I know that E12 doesn't have a powerful BASS boost, but it enhances sound quality well as far I know.

For me, sound quality is the main scope.

Price difference between E11 and E12 is huge as far you know. First costs about $60, second one about $130.

But, does this price difference worth for quality difference between E11 and E12, In case of use with HD 598?

I mean, can be such sound quality difference between E11 + HD 598 and E12 + HD 598, that I should pay extra $70 (price difference between these two amps)?

I also heard that E12 has 24 bit / 96 Khz support, what is also important for me, because I love Lossless formats as I mentioned. I would play these formats too in Iphone, by "Flac Player" app.

Does E11 have 24 bit / 96 Khz compatibility?

If someone knows better amps or better brands, feel free to advice. My budget is up to $170. But I don't want to waste a lot of money if I could get the same performance in case of significant money safe.

As 24-bit/96 Khz is a digital reference and the Fiio E12 (and E11) is an analog only input device, I can't see someone "labeling" the E11 or E12 as having 24-bit/96Khz "compatibility" (or limitation).

I would say to save some cash and get the E11.

Down the line you can always sell off the E11 and get the E12.

PurpleAnger,

So, if I drop 24/96 .flac music in "FLAC PLAYER" app on iphone, then my Iphone through E11 as well as E12 would play them.

As far I know, E11 has more bass boost, but E12 has more realisting sound.

Also I heard that headphones of HD 598 class do not need much power from AMP, someone told me that E12 with its 800 mw can overkill my HD 598. I understand this, that I need AMP with less output power and such is E11.

Thank you for help, I appreciate it :)

I doubt the E12 would "overkill" the HD598 or any other headphone.

The HD598 could be easily driven by the $27 Fiio E6

But I'm going guess the E11 can last a fair bit longer on a single charge, then the E6.

Yeap, but price difference isn't huge for me between E6 and E11. In addition, by almost all parameters E11 is better, has more elegant design. I may get E11 + accesories http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-Accessory/dp/B004QVPGXK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1371014990&sr=8-2&keywords=fiio+e11 what is most recommended let's say combo for E11.

For my 50 ohm HD 598 will be enough good I mean, If I get stronger Headphones in future, I will probably change E11 to E12.

But todays, I'm amateur audiophile :)), it will be great couple (E11 + HD 598) for starting for me I think. Future will show me direction.

PurpleAngel, thank you again :)

You should also look into the C&C BH, which is $100. I like the amp on it better than the amp on my FiiO E17. Learn more in the discussion thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/644363/c-c-bh-portable-headphone-amp-80-hours-from-a-single-charge-buyer-review

Unless your Iphone has a 24 bit/96KHz DAC you can't take any real advantage of 24 bit flac files. As far as I know, Iproducts don't have 24 bit DACs. (That doesn't mean that 24 bit files can not be played)
Anyway, in my opinion that is not a real problem because the difference in sound quality between (Flac files) 16 bit/44,1KHz and 24 bit/96KHz  is very little if any.

Something that changes sound quality in a more noticeable way is Dynamic Range. Be sure of listening to music with good dynamic range to get the most of your setup. Especially if you listen to relatively new recordings >1990

Best Luck!

I guess you will find this quite interesting.
This is a measurement of HD 598 Impedance made by Innerfidelity.com

Anyway E11 is powerful enough for them.

cel1445,

Me x3,

Thank you guys, I will order E11 today. for >=300 ohm Headphones would be E12 best solution. for 50ohm E11 is enough good, especially for amateur audiophile.

What about 24/96 DAC, which is not on Iphone, It's a bit funny, why to create opportunity to listen 24 bit lossless on Iphone, if its sound card can't give us real sound in this case? I mean, why to create app and mention 24/96 support on it? :) Play in any case is possible and I know this from my old sound card (16-bit/48-Khz).

If sound card doesn't have such a support, will be any difference in sound between 16-bit and 24-bit .flac files in this case? I think wont...

Do you have the iPhone 4 or iPhone 5?

With the IPhone 4, you can get a Fiio L cable, it provides a slightly cleaner analog audio signal to an external amp, from the iPhone 4, as it bypasses the iPhone's built in amplifier.

I believe the newer iPhone 5 with it's newer "lighting" digital output, makes it easier to hook up a separate DAC (or add-on DAC/Amp device).

No I have the first Iphone, 2G :)

But I'm going to buy Iphone 4 or 4S soon, for Fall maybe. my 2G is like a truck when I really need the speed, also battery is too weak.. I understand it's normal for phone with age of 5-6 year :D.

But anyway, I will get Iphone 4 indeed.

i have the E11 with the 598, honestly, it is a waste it adds a little more bass, but it is slightly looser, it makes the treble different sorry i want to say brighter or more detailed but neither of those are right but i do like what it does to the treble but it adds silibance and the soundstage is the same, along with timber, articulation, dynamics ect.... however if you want to get an at home amp with a rca to 1/4 jack termination and run your ipod through that because the cord on the senny's is more than long enough they sound great paired with a tube amp. some ones to look at are the hifiman EF2A, the little dot mk1+, mk2 are around your budget, the o2 is supposedly a great amp for the price but it's a solid state which really doesn't pair well with these, i've had them in a few really nice creek audio ss amps and had issues with silibance and harshness with them, tubes just sound better with these cans imo.

the official impendance is 50ohm but there is a spike up to 260ohm and i had them in a benalli ha540 which has a gain of 35!!!! while the volume was sencitive it really brought a lot more out of the cans when the got more juice compared to the port on it that had a gain of 1

Have you heard the HD598's? What do you mean ss amps don't suit them well, they 598's are already smothed out/rolled of in the highs, I figure using an SS amp with them is very good.

yeah i own them biggrin.gif and i thought the same thing and was thinking on buying the odac/ o2 amp combo because i love their sound sig and figured an ss amp would just be a more power full and filled out reflection of that, which it is but i went to huppins and listened to a few creek audio amps which are solid state and very nice. they only had one tube amp though from benalli in the same price range. really it is just preference the ss isn't bad for the 598 i just thought a tube paired better. it made them even more smooth and airy, and really showed the sound stage off and was very dynamic but the guy at huppins said that was more that tube and most tubes don't add THAT much dynamics usually. the ss had more bass, more treble, was crisper, and had great imaging. for me the treble is already right where i want it, and i just loved how smooth and intimate the tube was.
