Amperex 8416's were nice.  I've also liked the 6H30i's.  Just about any headphone is good with the clear top RCA 6SN7s.  I've just started breaking in a pair for Brimar CV4034's that are sounding very promising.  What about you?

Just got my new Mad Dogs, ugh how I've missed this. These are def an improvement over the first ones I had with the Shure pads

God, these are almost perfect but that shrill that shows up once in a while is so annoying.  These were sooooo close.  Back to the 650's.

What amp?

Meier Classic.

Never heard this one.

Is it known to be particularly hot (as in "treble happy")? I don't see how the Mad Dogs can sound shrill confused.gif

"Sometimes" they sound shrill, confirming some of the earlier impressions.  I didn't find them dark either, rather clean and airy.  On some recordings yes, the closed sound is apparent but it's been absolutely superb.  Wish I could live with that one negative.

Maybe it's the track?  I have not heard even a sigle hint of shrillness out the Mad Dogs.

I agree with Prep. The MD is very true to the recording. They will reproduce music very faithfully to the track. If the recording is on the "hot" side then that's what you'll get. If the bass hits hard, you'll get that also.

I mean to each his own but I never thought they were shrill or I would have smashed them and then hung myself. I hate treble lol

LOL!

Yeah, I don't find them offensive either.

Maybe Uchiya can provide us with the track(s) he was testing?
