The Vali is a total gem of an amp too, rather amazing value and same small size as the magni...

Do you have your hands on one? I'd love to know how you'd compare it to others in the field.

I have a Vali prototype and really enjoy it a lot. Terrific product for the money! As a MOT it's not really appropriate of my to compare to other amps, etc but I have no issue saying it's an exceptional value.

For portables, these are my choices for DAC/amps that I have heard or owned and particularly like (in no particular order):

Ray Samuels Intruder

ALO international

Centrance M8

IBasso DB2/pb2

It's worth noting that there are tons of choices here and many products I haven't heard, so this isn't meant to be any kind of definitive list, just some examples of pieces I liked enough to purchase or would like to purchase.

I'll simply say that I prefer the sound of the Vali, it's a bit less analytical, with a nice warm, full bodied sound.  It's a very fun pairing.  The Magni is a fantastic value, but for my taste the Vali is a a better call.  It's just a whole lot of fun.

Hello all,
This is my first post here. I have a lot of respect for you folks, who are in love with headphones:)
I have a pair of Grado SR60i.
I plan to purchase close hset. My choice is Mad Dog but I have a question regarding to listening comfort.
If I buy Mad Dog (Mad Dog + Leather ALPHA Pads + Comfort Strap) will those pads have flat contact with ears, or will surround them?
I have no possibility to test them right now so thats why I'm interesting of above thread.

Regards
Seb

Alpha pads surround the ears nicely. Don't think anyone has reported issues with the pads or clamp. The only comfort issue if any is the weight vs lighter headphones.

And the fact that it gets a bit warm after a while. other than that, they're exteremly comfortable. Go for 'em!

The Asus Xonar Essence one ( and muses ed) are great with the Mad Dog, plenty of power and sounds very clean and accarute. Also got an old analog Marantz on speaker taps, I still prefer the Asus due to cleaner sound(and way much nicer to look at). Ofc price is maybe a problem for many of you, but if you are unlucky and your country makes it expensive to import the Asus One gets a price at almost the same as an imported amp in the 200usd range.

I love the Alpha pads. I moved on from the MDs but I had to get me those lovely pads...

I can confirm that they fit the SRH1540 with the thick sides facing upward and lining the seem on the thin sides with the cable entries. This may not work with larger heads, however, as I had to do a stretch mod for it to fit without any issues.

I love the effect these have on the sound so much that I can't go back to the stock alacantara pads... though they are lovely, also.

I'm looking for some advice. I bought the Mad Dogs 3.2 earlier this year because I wanted a closed can. Now that I have the TH600 coming in the mail, should I let the mad dogs go?

In January, you can upgrade your 3.2s to Alpha Dogs, and then sell the TH600s.

Joking (although you can do that).

The differences between the three seem to be taste.

Anyone else noticing a strong smell of chemicals with the recently made comfort straps? The bottom side of the strap also seems to be flaking a bit...

The quality of the comfort strap on my previously owned Mad Dogs from Aug 2012 and another comfort strap bought right after the Alpha pads were released were substantially higher than the ones currently in production.

Our strap maker sent us a bad batch we rejected.  The smell was really bad, but the straps were mixed in with good ones and we had to sort the good from the bad by smell.  Our noses might have been fouled to the point we missed a couple of bad ones.   PM me your address and I'll ship you a replacement strap right away, as that smell is absolutely unacceptable.  If anyone else has a strap that does not smell like normal, quality leather drop a note and we'll take care of you.
