Remember that pads are also part of the "enclosure" of the drivers, they are analogous to room treatments (except in miniature).

So, Alpha Pads will change the sound of any headphones where they are used to substitute for existing different pads.

In other words, your Denons, HiFiMans, etc. will sound different in unpredictable ways.

In fact, this was responsible for Dan's change in tuning from 3.0 to 3.2 - it was to compensate for the different sound due to the Alpha Pads.

I've seen you write this before, but I'm a bit confused. You do realize that the Alpha Pads were already implemented on the Mad Dog 3.0, right?

He is correct, we tried to keep the tuning the same from dog pad to alpha pad but found we got better results with adjustment...

Has anyone used the Audio-gd SA-31 with the Mad dogs? It seems like they provide alot more power compared to the other amps around the $500 pricerange. Pair it with a Bitfrost Uber and it seems like a good setup..

My HIFI-M8 arrived 09/03/13.  Yes, a great pairing.

The iBasso PB2 / DB2 has been touted as a nice portable solution with the MD's.  Cough *there might be one for sale soon* Cough.  OK, mildly off topic shameless plug over.

Anyone here have a MD and a FiiO X3? How does this work as a portable setup?

I would use a brighter source than Fiio to balance the slight dark side of the MD

I wouldn't say that fiio products are the best choice for an amp with the MD. The Asgard 2 is a nice solid state choice that has good balance with the MD.

Or at least a neutral amp. I haven't heard all the Fiio products but I agree, not my first choice with the MD.

Don't discount the e12... Good performance at the price point.

Got to go against the big Kahuna on this one. The e12 with the MD just doesn't do it for me across the board. At best it was "okay."

Well, he did say good... not great. I have the E12 and my MD performs good on my portable setup... and great on my desktop with the iCAN. But of course not stupendous like it would with the more powerful monsters out there... I mean these are planars so we can expect better performance with more power. To you it may only be ok but that's because you've heard what it can do...and I'm assuming you have the balanced or universal MDs. Don't discount the fact that the SE sounds much better than most headphones out there with just the E12.
