URGENT HELP

Every once in a while I run into a passive preamp but never pull the trigger.  Might not be a bad idea for some uses such as active speakers.

The problem is that it's still common to find preamps with upwards of 20dB of gain, which is absolutely ludicrous given that most power amps have input sensitivities of just a volt or two.

Ultimately it would depends on the length of your cable runs. Resistive-based passives have relatively high output impedances (for example, 2.5k for those based on a 10k potentiometer) so cable capacitance can be a bit problematic for long cable runs, rolling off the high frequencies.
