That's not the only problem, I found out that because there is no native support for DSD, the AK120 in DAC mode won't play any DSD from fb2k...

Personally, I didn't buy the AK120 because it supports DSD. I don't think many people did. It is more of a bonus.

I also did not either but it is part of their selling point, I think it would be nicer if they were clear about it not been a native DSD.

I know iriver reads this threads carefully and no doubt the AKxx brand are still new, my criticism is that so the future products are much better developed. If it was not for this stuff Ak100 would have never gotten the AK120 UI and they would have never enabled the USB dac feature in the Ak100 and no one would have expected them to do so as it simply was not part of their advertisement however DSD was part of AK120 and i think perhaps this is something which might have been marginally misleading.

True, that's why I started to think that the VC SDT is a good partner for the AK120 for DSD use.

Never heard of it, which one is this?

I am thinking of purchasing the TEAC DSD dac, I am just waiting for Australian to become better before I purchase it.

VC SDT = VentureCraft SounDroid Typhoon, however, I was speaking straightly in terms of DSD use, as I don't think the SDT is really a good enough DAC/AMP for the AK100/120.  But to be fair I do intended to test this out, and I just waiting on a optical cable so I can begin my test.  The SDT is the only portable DAC/AMP that supports 64 bits DSD from the computer, and this is what make it interesting (along other things) as the AK120 can only plays DSD in DAP mode but not DAC mode.

Several friends amp the Ak120 and see a clear improvement with high RSA amps, Pico Power and the like. However I do not use amps anymore as I find them not ergonomic at all. If a 1k player does not sound excellent with iems, then I sell it.

Yeah, that's the exact reason that stop me, at least for now, on getting the ReMK3+B for my AK120.  And if some of the mods mentioned work as well as advertised, then there is really no need for an external amp.

The rwak120 mod, to use the player as a standalone, just bypasses 5he resistors to provide a cleaner path for the signal. I doubt it may improve the sound the way an amp would, I do not mean not as good, just quite different.

Close, but I was thinking about the RWAK120-S (or was it R?)

The RWAK120s will definitely improve SQ I would think, and works ONLY with external amp. To me it is not thinkable to be unable to use my ak120 solo.

I agree to an extent. DSD functionality is a marketed feature, and it should have been better implemented, but honestly it is unrealistic to think a portable device will play native DSD. I do agree that the USB DAC feature should have included DSD support for sure - failure on iRivers part for that.

Listening to DSD format on the go seems very attractive, but IMO - DSD is meant for home use where you can enjoy your music without ambiance, so the quality can be fully enjoyed.
