Wow, the DX-100 is that slow?  Makes the HM-901's 1 minute start up to music playing seem like lightning speed.  And the AK120 start up is practically instant on in comparison.

Well my DX100 would boot up in less than a minute when I had my unit and that was with the internal 64 GB memory filled as well as the external memory filled with 64 GBs of music. So I'm not sure why his unit takes that much longer? Generally it took like 15 minutes for the very fist scan to index all the music and every restart after that took less than a minute to boot. I also had it rooted and removed extra junk to make the OS more snappy.

The DX100 start up is usually not that slow. It may take about 5mins to start up whenever a new album has been added because the device needs to rescan all the folders. But when no new songs has been added, the DX100 usually start up within 30 seconds.

My experience with the AK120 is that the start up is not instant. Even with the auto scan function disabled, mine would still take about 30 seconds with 2 64GB cards on it.

Uhmm... My AK120 starts up in about 5-8 secs with two 64gb cards. The DX100 is significantly slower in comparison.

LOL. I guess that is not good news for me.

In short, yes, the DX-100 is that slow.  However, I never timed it to get an exact number.  When you put 172GB+ (the REAL total formatted value, e.g. 64 internal + 128 external with an adapter) music in it and compare the scanning time to the AK120, it's at least 5x slower (maybe worse).  And that's NOT an exaggeration.  I could have lived with that if it was on demand scanning like the AK120 (and if the AK120 didn't blow it away in many other aspects).  However, it did it every time I powered the damn thing on (powered on, not resumed from sleep).  So, the only way to have the DX100 not scan, was to always leave it on, but just turn the screen off (sleep) when you're not using it).  IMHO, a bad idea - that just eats up battery power.  And, by the way, the 192GB SDXC card I was using is class 10, so it wasn't that the card was slow.  OK, there, you got me up on my soapbox again. TIme to get down. :-)

Yours is really fast.... I just timed my AK120 (/w 2 sandisk class 10 sdxc 64gb card), from the boot screen came up until I can play the last played song is 19.5 sec.  Same test ran for HM-901 (w/ 1 kingston class 10 sdxc 128gb card), it took 58.8 sec.  Don't have the DX100 with me now but it feels longer than the HM-901.  These are all without db scanning.

Just for curiosity and comparison purposes to see what others are experiencing, I put together the following table.  I'd love to see what others are experiencing...

Software Version Capacity Used Power Up (initial screen to main menu displayed) Library Rescan (Full) Person Cards Remaining Capacity
1.21 172GB 17 sec 6 min / 40 sec dsalomon 2 x 64GB Int=1.21GB, Ext1=2.27GB, Ext2=868MB

Others, please add your experiences...

I just timed my AK120 and it took close to 55secs from the time I pressed the "On" button and for the screen to complete reading my SD cards. I am running firmware 1.00. Autoscan was turned off. My Japanese version of the DX100 took close to 45 seconds to get ready for listening biggrin.gif

i've also heard that Hdp-r10 may perform better than stock dx100.  In any case with 1.2.7 my dx100 should be somewhere about 90-120seconds (again just from memory and comparing to the HM901 times)....

55secs is quite dismal... what sort of cards you using? I have those 2 cards with 55gb or so filled and none on internal memory.  My time is more or less in line with what Dsalomon posted, even tho we both are on 1.21 but I don't recall with 1.00 it loaded that much longer... arghhhh i missed 1.00's sound  :(

I have a variety of SD cards, so I loaded up my portable music on the Sandisks (same as yours) and tried the test again. This time load time was about 18secs, probably due to the fact that my other micro SD cards (the ones I originally had in were not full and are pretty much all 16/44 FLAC). These Sandisk ones have a lot more Hi-Res music uploaded.

Would like to hear the reviews on how the AK120 sounds with some CANS (not just IEMs). I will be posting mine once my AK120 arrives!

I am using one Sandisk and one Samsung pro card. Both are 64GB. The Samsung is rated even faster than the Sandisk. I think it has a read speed of about 70MB.

I have two SanDisk Ultra (Class 10) 64GB mSDXC cards exFAT formatted.   Both are filled with a mix of 16/44 and 24/96 FLAC; I don't have any music stored in internal flash.  My AK120 takes 18 seconds to start.

Update - I'm also using firmware V.1.00
