[REVIEW] Aurisonics ASG-2 & 2.5 (with many comparisons)

what u can do is go set the maximum volume to a lower volume. maybe try like 25% as ur max volume. Then the entire bar is set to have max at 25% and should give you a bit more flexibility.

Either you read him wrong or I'm reading u wrong. What you are asking him to do is what he already posted trying?

I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding. I think I have a normal hearing. I can't imagine ANY situation where <10% as max volume and the first click is too loud. Really.. Not with the ASG-2. So there should be some kind of misunderstanding.

Does anyone know how to lower the volume on my ASG-2s? I know theyre very sensitive but I have set my volume slider to the lowest I can get it at and only go one click above silent when listening to music on the stock music app. I am using an iPhone 4 btw. Any apps that have a more precise volume control or is there any better solution? Thanks and still enjoying every hour with these iems :)

You should get an app like "Equalizer" which has a preamp — that will help you sort out the issues you're having.

it was like when the bass port was closed but there was a wee bit more bass and extension, but if the bass port was truly closed you cant get the same effect, on any setting of the bass port could not replicate this. IT sounded like the air had more space to move but still being restricted , i want to experiment with different materials to plug the bass port hole , i have acoustic cotton , a sanded down toothpick , some foam and rubber from an eraser

If you're not averse to jailbreaking, there's a cydia app called Volume Booster that effectively doubles the number of volume steps on the idevices. This should give you more control overall.

Funny that you mention this, I was visiting Bangkok today when I stumbled upon an Hi-Fi shop that had 5 "upgrade" cables available with the Westone plugs that fits my ASG-2.

All of them at least had the merit to slightly reduce bass, preventing this light boom I hear even with the bass port closed.
Seems like the Westone Epic cable which is delivered with ASG-2 is indeed not a very good match with ASG-2s (I got the black one).

I tried a Black Lagoon cable (not much to say, nothing special).
FiiO RC-WT1: nothing special either, even though I like the white color.
I also tried 3 Toxic cables: OCC, silver and OFHC. OCC added a touch of warmth but at the expense of mids (mids took a step down which isn't to my liking, but neutrality freaks may appreciate). Silver made the sound a bit drier/ more analytical (treble were too fast to my taste). OFHC sounded quite good but I couldn't say exactly how (switching between stock cable and the other 5 became tedious after an hour). I'll double check this cable tomorrow, because I got distracted by their awesome choice of portable players (DX50/DX100, X3, AK100, AK120... I was like a kid in a candystore).

I'm way more curious about how you thought the X3 and DX50 matched up with the G2.

i just tried the foam ! the bass is significantly more....rumbly definetly more extension in the bass , the same type you get with a high end subwoofer

Ghetto cross-valve mod?

too much exposure to low frequency and white noise can be damaging for your ears

Thanks everyone. Yup my maximum volume slider was below 10% and I would only go to the first click. I think ill try Ekes suggestion of volume booster since my phone is already jailbroken.

Unless this is only with the ASG-2. I think there is something wrong with your phone. Take it to an apple store if possible is my suggestion.

What kind of foam? I tried cutting up a pair of comply tips to get a thin slice. After maybe 20 minutes of testing sine tones at 20, 100 and 200 Hz I think that I hear some difference in the sub bass when comparing fully open with foam inserted with fully closed with foam. If the valve closes completely it shouldn't matter if the foam is still there. I'm sure about the difference on 20Hz. On 100 and 200 Hz I'm very uncertain but there is no apparent difference.

I just think that the sound is a bit different. This may be equivalent of partially blocking the UE900 pinhole. I don't know about the theoretical part. Anyway. It's worth testing so if you feel like it, please try it for yyourselves. Nice post Unity.

I'm way more curious about how you thought the X3 and DX50 matched up with the G2.

This is the beauty of ASG-2s, I left EQ flat, no bass boost, and they sounded great with all the players I've used in the shop. Maybe I'm becoming a little sensitive to bass, but I could even have decreased bass a little to get them more "neutral".
Nothing like my SE535Ltd, which always require a light bass boost and some trele adjustment to sound their best.

Conclusion: great sound with most players, but I found myself more attracted to the AK100/120 because they sounded exactly like my Cowon X7.
X3 was dirt cheap (~160$) but the lack of a real EQ and the limited capacity/battery (why the hell 8Gb FiiO, you're not selling a Sansa Clip !!!) just pissed me off. These days, 32Gb of good flash memory are less than 25$ and manufacturers still refuse to propose affordable players with 32/64Gb of memory (+ slot). What?
DX50 was nice as well but 8Gb again and not in stock (the guy had 1 demo unit, 10 of them already booked and was waiting for another 10 units).
DX100 was nice as well but I just didn't bear the clunky Android UI, I was looking for a music player, not a hemiplegic smartphone.

Actually I kinda felt bad about it (like a blackhole in my wallet), but I bargained such a nice discount on the A&K players that I ended buying th AK120 for the equivalent of 1000$ (no VAT plus 10% discount). Brand new box + perfectly legit receipt = intense satisfaction (morally, not financially!).

Sorry for the offtopic, but in the end, I have finally made a short stop in my quest for perfect IEMs (for my taste).
I was disappointed after 2 hours testing IE800, K3003 and the latest Cardas IEMs. The Cardas especially. Only the K3003 found grace in my eyes, very detailed sound, natural and delicate, but a bit to shy in the mids for my taste, and so-so ergonomics (at least they use standard wide-bore tips).
IE800: again terrible ergonomics, with the proprietary tips and awful cable, good big bass for those who like strong, but not my thing.
The Cardas (the golden ones): never seen a heavier cable in my life on IEMs (honestly this is terrible when wearing them), and the sound, although quite detailed, was too cavernous (probably the "magical golden ratio" which is written on the box, nice commercial BS as I suspected, too much space behind the driver for sure). Also treble are quite recessed (no roll-off but way too much in the back) For the price asked by Cardas, a damn shame. At least you get your load of precious metals.

That's a great price for a brand new one. Would you say it's on another level compared to something like the DX50?

Did you get it? I'll have a go at it in the coming weeks, so it'd be great to compare impressions.

I've never really been interested in the phone, and it seems you're paying more for the materials than the SQ.

By the way, I learned a new magic trick. ASG-2 + 75ohm ER4P to S adapter = disappearing treble.
